Restoring a turbo Z i got a great deal on. Replaced the stock turbo with a rebuild td05h from an evo iii. While under load, after 3k the engine revs up higher (can hear engine rev) but not instant power. After holding it at higher rpm, the trans catches up with the engine, and the rpms lower slightly. The car has electrical problems and the speedo doesn't work, but i can hear an increase in exhaust when driving.

Could this be the clutch slipping at the higher rpms? I'm not sure where to go from here, and don't want to tear the drive train apart and find out its not the clutch. I've searched over various forums and search engines and have had no luck to date.

Has anyone else experienced or known of a problem like this? Car has 160k on it, and I'm fairly sure not many parts, if any, have been replaced before my owning of the car.

a slipping clutch should be pretty obvious, if not, it will be soon! also have you checked for boost leaks? sometimes witha boost leak you hear the turbo speed up but you don't get the power, and since you just replaced your turbo with the rd o5h whihc si pretty comperable to the stock turbo I don't think your ower output will be much different unless you are now running more boost

Put it in 5th on some lonely backroad at 50mph, give it full throttle. If the revs increase and the car doesn't go anywhere then you are slipping. If it accelerates normal then it isn't. If you fix your speedometer (and tach, maybe?) before you test it then you will be able to tell if it's slipping lightly.

My car actually seems to be doing sort'a the same thing, and I have only 10k less mileage. I've been given suggestions about the turbo as well, but I haven't had any looks at it just yet. I've never even considered it the clutch. Same thing for my car not having had much work done on it either through past owners. The boost leak sounds right, as previously stated. My gas mileage has been going down as well, unfortunately, which can link to the turbo, OR, it could also link to fuel delivery. I feel like I see extra smoke out my exhaust, but it's hard to tell for me, cuz where I live the cold is just starting to die down.Anyway, I'd suggest looking into the Turbo before the clutch.
