So I've had my V little over a year. love the car, but I've noticed that in 6th gear at about 65-70mph im at about 3200rpm...is this normal? In my other car (84 300ZX) 65-70 at about 2600rpm in 5th. maybe just the difference in 5 or 6 gears? but I found it strange, and so does everyone I mention it to. The mileage is still great, averaging right around 30mpg driving an hour to and from work at 70+ mph, just curious.

Though other people have a similar dislike of the 'high RPMs' I don't see it as a problem. My past cars were all 4-cylinder engines and ran at a similarly 'high' RPM on the highway. My prelude had a much more powerful engine but ran at closer to 4k RPMs at ~70 mph, if my memory serves me right.

This is normal. There has been much discussion on the board about whether or not Nissan screwed up the gear ratios. But unless someone actually goes through the trouble of replacing their gears with a different ratio set, we won't know the difference.

Like GWV, I also subscribe to the theory that different models of engines will have different efficiency points. You can't unilaterally say that ALL engines will be as efficient at 2800 rpm. Some engines will be at their best then. Some will need higher or lower rpms to run their most efficient.

One thing I will point to, though, is the CVT vs. 6-speed fuel economy debate. The theory of the CVT is to keep the RPMS right in the "sweet spot", and also to cruise at lower RPM's than a 6-speed at highway speeds.

Some CVTs have done very well in this, but overall the 6-speeds have been getting better mileage. Take it for what you will.

The high revs on the hwy is not much of a problem with me. The 1.8 is quiet enough and it also means I don't have to down shift for some light passing.

On another note, the Integra Type R (dc2 for you honda nuts) run at exactly the same revs on the hwy. Of course we have 1 extra gear while the itr gets more horsies and an LSD ~_~.

we have two 4 cyl motors and 2 8 cyl motors and one 6 cyl motor at my house and all of them are ran these at highway speeds 70 mph

Yeah, Versa's gearing is awfully short. 3000rpm at tallest gear is 65mph. But the little 1.8L does not make much torque. Any taller you would need to downshift to accelerate.

My GTI with 1.8T does 75mph @ 3000rpm in the tallest (5th) gear. But it has gobs of torque starting at 2000rpm.

True, turbo's will do that for you.

I have been plotting to modify the V mani to fit a VW 1.8t Turbo, and put the 1.8t badge on it. I think that little snail would be just the thing to kick the V in the butt, and get it moving. I am very pleased with the car thus far, but it is just what it's supposed to be; a little, slow, econobox. And that's great, because it's just what I need! But a little boost (pun intended) in power, whilst mantaining the drivability, would be awesome. And I'll tell ya, going from the V for a week, and then hoppin in the Z on Sat. is a thrill.
