same engine...just different ECU. Everything should mount up the same. Should be able to just grab up the core, no electronics fairly inexpensive for either, (since technically the internals are the same for both, a VG30DE is a VG30DE), if the engine itself is the only damaged part.

From the video someone posted the J30 version of the engine is supposed to be an improvement over the 300ZX version.

There are two version of VG30DE

1st version. 89 ~ 93 300ZXThis version is known for its bad injector. Experts claim that alchohol in gas speeds up the corrosion in the injector coil. This is a very expensive repair. Also, CAS sensor on this version of VG30DE is made by Mitsubishi. Problems are reported with crankshaft assembly which will make knocking sound

2nd version. 93 ~ up J30 and 94 and up 300zxThis version has the updated injectors. CAS is made my Hitachi and crankshaft assembly is revised.

General difference b/w the VG in J30 and 300zxAir intake and fuel lines.

I will suggect you get the 2nd version VG30DE.

They are indentical in every way, as far as intarnals go. The major differences are the Injectors(will require you to cut the connectors from your donor car), and the exhaust manifolds.

Isn't the plenum different too? And the motor mounts?

The plenum is identical the difference is in the balance tube design.
