I had a shop look at my exhaust for me to find the cause of a rattle after bottoming my car out. The tech said the rattle is due to broken welds on the heat shield above the rear cat.

He gave me 2 options to fix it. A direct replacement of the cat, or take the heat shield off, but he said something about some other welds that could break in the process.. or some other leaks that would result in replacing the cat anyway.

My question is.. is this doable at home? It seems like alot of money just to remove the heat shield.

Broken welds on the heat shields on an Altie flex pipe assembly can be fixed with stainless radiator clamps. Nissan even has a bulletin about it. Unless the shield is mangled and can't be bent back, this guy is just trying to sell you a flex pipe.
