Good Morning,

Anyone have any thoughts on what a good cruising RPM is for this engin? I grew up with manual transmission cars like a 5spd supercharged Thunderbird where 1,600 RPM was perfect and then things like a V6 Audi and Acura RSX Type S where the cruising RPM's felt obvious. With the Infinity, the VVT gives it such a broad power-band that it could be 1,700 or 4,000 and feel just as comfortable w/ light throttle.

I care more about doing what is best for the motor than what maximizes fuel mileage and I especially don't want to be lugging it around if it is counter productive to everything. Watching the car's own fuel mileage read-out, it seems that 2,000 - 2,100 RPM seems about right. Does anyone have any thoughts?

This is obviously not an urgent matter, I am just bored :chuckle: Thank you for your time.

John

From a fuel economy perspective it would be "slower the better". From a longevity perspective I've never really thought about it :)

If you are cruising, rather than accelerating, the lower the rpm the better. This is true for both fuel consumption and longevity. However, you don't want to drop so low that you need full throttle just to hold your speed. When accelerating, if response is sluggish, you need to drop down a gear or two. The lower limit on practical rpm increases as you get into higher gears. To make life simple, I try to keep it above 2,000 rpm unless I am coasting down hill.

Thank you Kendahl, I have noticed that 2,000-2,100 at light throttle seems to be about right from the car's own mpg read-out. Any lower and it drops. For anything more than light accelleration, I will downshift a gear or two.
