2009 Sentra CVT Problems?

Hi All,

I just purchased a 2009 Sentra 2.0FE+S and I think there is something wrong with the CVT transmission. I have about 1500 miles on it sofar. I keep hearing a ping (a sound similar to but not as lowed as hitting metal with a mallet) that seems to come from the transmission. I only hear this noise when I first start the engine and put it in drive and accelerate to above 10 m/h. I also hear what sounds like transmission "engaging hesitation"(the RPM needle does not show hesitation though) from about 10 m/h to about 40 m/h. I don't hear this ping or hesitation any other time though. Also, when I do a hard stop the car seems jerk more than normal just before the car comes to a complete stop. I don’t know if any of this is normal with the CVT transmission.

I am getting ready to take it back to the shop but I was wondering if anybody knows of any similar problems or knows what could cause such a thing to happen. I don't recall the car I test drove did a similar thing so I am a little disappointed.

Does anybody have information on Nissan’s CVT reliability?

The hard-stop jerk and, if I'm reading you right, the hesitation are completely normal. There's a discussion of this phenomenon here - zerothread/347519

The "ping" is an odd noise. Does it just "ping" and stop or is it a high pitched, continuous noise or how else can you describe it?

Good thing you're under warranty and can make Nissan take care of it.

I took the car to the dealer to get it checked and according to them this "ping" is from the ABS. it does a self check at around 10mph which causes the "ping" sound. They also said that the jerking when doing a hard stop is normal.

I hope they know what they are taking about. I will get it checked again at a different dealer on my next service and see what they say.

hey, guy, my 08 sentra S doing what u mention, a sound like "ping" just happen at the beginning of I drive a car, than no more, only happen one time sice u star and drive the car. i took it to the dealer several times, but no problem found, they always told me that they couldnt hear the sound, they always doing s***! have no help for this problem, dealers are pretend not to hear the sound, and ask u to go. maybe they will fix it when the warranty go out, than ask us to paid a lot for it.

are you talking about the automatic door lock system that lock the door at low speed? It's a ping (for my car it's pretty loud) , it's just happen at the beginning, one time since u start and drive the car.

Welcome! The bump/jolt is normal and gets less noticeable as the miles add up. I have 27,000 on ours now and its been a great car so far. The cvt requires you to drive a little smother than you would with other auto transmissions. Never noticed a ping? Maybe a little thump but not a ping.

The only complaint I have is the blind spot pass. rear is kinda large.

welcome to nico! hope this site is as helpful to you as it had been to methe jerk/hesitation is normaland mines hasnt given me any trouble so far i have about 51k on my 07so as far as the cvt goes, it was a huge change and people have been expecting alot of drawbacks and faults, but it has been good to me so farhope this is of help
