I have a 2007 Murano with 24K miles, I have changed the oil several times and recently on cold start there is a large amount of white smoke that pours out of the exhaust. The dealership said I have sludge buildup and that is causing the problem. Suggested I change the oil every 1500 miles until the problem goes away.

This is a major embarrasement every time we cold start the car and I wondered if there was something else that would give us immediate resolution to the problem.

Any suggestions?

white smoke?not 100% sure but im pretty sure white smoke has nothing to do w/ sludge build up. but if in fact you do have sludge build up the only way to get rid of it is to flush it out by keeping your engine clean and of coarse more frequent oil changes. but i would think it would be a blueish colored smoke.

Thanks, not a real car person but it guess it could be termed a bluish white smoke. The mechanic swiped his finger and came out with sludge. HoHow do you clean the engine? Additives, a process? The dealership has not provided any solutions. At 24K miles can you get a sludge buildup?

well deffinatley you canif you dont keep up w/ the maitnance and it also depends on how you drive your car. do you do more of city driving or highway if you do city driving you should do an oil change more often about 3000 miles if your using conventional oil and prolly 5-7000 for synthetic.the only way i kno of cleaning it from sludge is to do what he told you im pretty sure thats about it.

Thanks again...Not being a car guy I wish the dealership reinfroced this when I bought the car, I would have been more diligent...Any idea how long it might take to clear this problem up? I realize without seeing it that's a tough question to answer. Am I looking at days or weeks? The EPA might come knocking if it continues.Does Sea Foam or any cleaner accellerate the cleaning process?

Yes, I drove it about 50 miles to get it nice and hot to possible "melt" any sludge, then had the oil changed. It was better for a day but overnight it happened again. Thanks for your insight and helping out a fellow Texan...
