While regular unleaded probably won't harm your engine (at least not right away) it is not what your motor requires. Do your Z a favor 91 and up is whats suggested/required by Nissan.

just to give you some back story on gasoline's octane rating...

the higher the octane number, the more resistant to explosion (detonation) inside the cylinder the gasoline is.

87 gas will explode sooner than 91, which will explode sooner than 93, so on and so forth. Your ECU has a knock sensor in the engine and will detect if pre-detonation is occuring. Pre-detonatoin is the premature explosion of gasoline in the cylinder, usually caused by lower octanes of gasoline and hot spots in the cylinder or high compression ratios.

When the ECU detects this knocking, it will reduce timing of the engine, which effectively reduces overall power. Knocking is not healthy for the engine by the way. So, for maximum power, running the highest octane gas is reccomended. In cooler weather, you might be able to get away with 89 (mid-grade), but as summer approaches, the best thing for you to do is get 91 or 93 and stick with that through the hot months.

For top car products, I'd check out griot's garage. You can also check you local, friendly dealer too.

if you don't want to run high octane fuel, why did you buy a sports car?... If you run low octane it voids warranty, and wears your motor faster than normal... its bad, don't do it... if you do make sure you do the next owner a favor and tell him you did so he should invest in some new rings....

i myself am probably one of the poorest 350z owners on this site and i still put and always will no mater what 93 octane. scratch those pennies up. i've been to the gas station a few times with $18 or so in quarters nickels and dimes. yea its embarrassing but my car will love me in the end for getting her the good stuff.

(p.s. they make you sit there and count it all out to them takes like 30 mins to get gas)
