If you are talking about where the back of bellhousing narrows and drops down to meet the trans front on an automatic it is generally the INPUT (sometimes called turbine) speed sensor. There is commonly another toward the back (driver end of trans on FWD) that is the output or main (vehicle) speed sensor. Some of those mount on the diff case at times.
Some few crank sensors mount in the engine block at the bellhousing face of the block, they read back of flywheel or flexplate instead of crankshaft to get the crank signal.
