Has anyone replaced their front cv axles? I’m trying to figure out what axles I need to get. I’ve seen some that specifically say that they don’t come with the abs ring, and others that don’t mention an abs ring at all. One parts company even has a video on how to do the replacement with their axles but it doesn’t mention anything about the abs ring even though they disconnect the abs sensor and the new axle looks exactly like the one they removed.

The tone ring is on the wheel hub, not the CV shaft. You won't have to mess with that.

There is a thrust washer that you must keep, though. Because it's greased up, it may stick on the wheel bearing, or it may stick to the CV. Either way, make sure it makes it onto the new CV.

Removing the ABS sensor is suggested so that you don't accidentally damage the wire. But more often than not, the bolt or sensor body gets seized in the hub. You can leave it in place, as long as you're mindful of it.

On an '01, you'd be wise to soak everything down there with PB Blaster a couple days before you start.

So this old thread just prevented me from a goof. Completely forgot about the thrust washer as it was stuck to the old CV axle. I happened to read this article and realized that I didn't transfer that thrust washer.

Dropped the LCA, removed the bolts from the newly installed CV axle, and put the thrust washer where it belonged. The good news is that the truck was still on the jack stands as I was waiting for a tool to arrive (so I can set the bearing preload).

Thanks for that comment! It really saved me from a costly error.
