Okay so I have figured out that I'm going to replace my Maxima (85' with 293k snapped a timing belt) with a 2001 or greater Pathfinder. I want to spend no more than 15k max, less is better. Looks like 2000 to 2001 is the big engine upgrade. Is there any big deal to get a 2002 or 2003 verus 2001? I want that 240 horse versus the old one, that has to be huge difference.

Anything to look for with these years? Are extended warrenties recommended? Also I for sure want 4x4 so I can take it skiing in Lake Tahoe.

The 3.5 engine is the same from 01 to 04 so it doesnt really matter. 2000 is the 3.3 belt driven engine. recommend you go for the VQ. The VQ has its little quirks but not catastrophic events so far with them. Extrended warranty is always good incase something major does go out.

What you doin with the max??

No I dont have a max, but the car is salvageable, to me fixing a problem like that is almost nothin, since it is all labor and I do the labor, for you though I understand as you would be having to pay the labor cost. I was considering taking the car if you were just gonna unload it , but I am sure you want the right off for it, I dont know what they give ya for right off either though??

I has alot of good parts on it and if I could do stuff myself I'd fix it for sure.

I heard that you can only get what they sell the car for at auction now, I hope that is not true but I'll find out. If they give me practically nothing we can talk.

Sure thing, I'm calling the charity probably week after next as I'm gone all next week.

BTW, update I'm not looking for a brand new or near new XTerra....the thought of that V6 with a 6 speed is just too cool, and they are very affordable too.

You mean you are NOW looking for a new Xterra? If you buy one remember they are a new model as that design is 05. Engine and body are brand new designs. The transmission has been in the Z for a couple yrs now. Expect there to be some new model quirks about them.

Well I sort of a new model guy, did that with my 84 ZX and my 97 Q and the quirks were always manageble. I'm very familiar with them now, I have driven several of them, although I have not found a live 6 speed to drive. The new engine is the bomb, i found a pickup with the same engine and the 6 speed and it was so nice to be connected to that much horse and torque with a manual. And the engine takes 87 octane. However, today I found out that Nissan is not offering 1.9 percent on the X-Terra right now so I may have had my party spoiled but we'll see....with the warranty they give now quirks are okay.
