Hello, I have recently acquired a 2001 i30. It is the touring edition, but it has one small problem. I cannot pass emissions due to the precat being bad. I was wondering, is there a decently priced "precat" that is worth the money? I do not really care if it's "oem" but I also do not want it to mess up on me come 2013 when I have to do emissions again. All advice and help is appreciated.

Im not 100% positive but IIRC the precat is in one of the exhaust manifold's (not absolutely positive, but I am leaning in that direction for some reason)

Is it failing for a code or for emissions? You can pull the spark plug anti-fouler trick if it's just for the code

What fault code do you have - P0420, P0430, etc? As for the pre-cat, it depends how long you want to keep the car. Five years or more, go with OEM pre-cat, less than 5 years, buy OEM-compatible one. The difference is the level of precious metals inside the cat - platinum, palladium and rhodium. Refer to the link below for more info:

I had fault code P0420. My mechanic gave me a hook up though. Got the OEM cat at a good price.

But how does that trick work? I had to replace it because i fail emissions due to the check engine light being on but I want to Y pipe it cuz i miss the rumble it had when the "precat" was bad.

I've been in the same boat and replaced one pre-cat already at $987 for an OEM one installed. The second one pops on a code every few months, but i've just kept clearing the code until it becomes more frequent. I plan on going the Y-pipe route this next time around though and completely lose the pre-cats altogether. I don't have to worry about emissions here anyway, so it doesn't matter if it does manage to pop on the CEL.
