General Information: I have a 2000 Infiniti I30 that has been displaying the Malfunction Indicator (Check Engine) Light for the last two and a half months. I got the codes pulled and they were P0171/P0174 which translated to Fuel System Lean Bank 1/Bank 2. Searching through my car's maintenance and repair manual, it lists the possible causes as:
* Intake air leaks
* O2 sensors
* Fuel injectors
* Exhaust gas leaks
* Incorrect fuel pressure
* Lack of fuel
* MAF sensor
The car runs fine for now. I wouldn't notice anything wrong if that light wasn't coming on, but I don't want to ignore it forever as I don't really know what consequences that might bring. I have done a few searches online and at least one thread (7 years old, so I can't exactly ask for help from these guys) with the same problem suggests that since both banks are throwing codes, it is unlikely the result of a problem with the injectors or O2 sensors. They also suggest that if it was the MAF, there would be more noticable symptoms.

My Symptoms & Observations: MIL came on about the last week of April and I ignored it for about a week until my car died on me in the middle of an intersection while idling. I was told that everything had been fixed and got my car back the day before I needed to drive home from school for the summer (~1400 mile drive). Sometime after my first fill up for gas, the MIL lit up again and being several hundred miles into my journey, and on a deadline to arrive home in time to start my summer job, I kept driving. The light turned itself off the next day, probably 1-2 fill ups and about 800 miles later, and stayed off for the first week I was back home. The day after I first refilled my gas when I got home, MIL pops up again. I don't have to drive far for work, so I again ignored it. I ended up disconnecting the battery for 24 hours to reset the ECM in June and everything seemed okay until I filled up the car and, again, the light turned back on.

Background/Recent Repair Information:
* Had alternator replaced last September.
* Had idle air control valve replaced in May.
* Had ECM replaced at the same time as the IAC valve in May.

So here I sit wondering what the best next step to take is. Any advice?

Welcome to NICO.

You can try cleaning the MAF with some electrical contact cleaner or a dedicated MAF cleaner. I would also check for vacuum leaks, as that could cause a lean condition.
