I just purchased a 1999 maxima with 223,000 miles for my sons first car. The car runs and looks great, what are some things I need to look at other than the basic fluids, belts, hoses etc.

It should be mostly maintenance stuff. Have the tires rotated/balanced and the alignment checked and you should be set.

In addition to above, do a transmission pan drop and clean the pan and magnets. Check the ATF filter and replace if dirty. Take note of the bolt orientation for the filter (different length) and there is one nut IIRC. Nissan Matic-D is recommended but Dexron III or better yet, Dexron VI, will do the job. Do multiple drain-and-refill. As always, ensure the ATF level is correct and add the exact amount of fluid drained. For the I30 (same as 4th Gen Maxima) I run the engine for @ 100 seconds while changing gear (parking brake set and brake applied) and then drained immediately. Three drain cycles will consume 12-15 quarts, depending if you drop the pan as well as the duration of drain period. If you used Matic-D or Dex III, a bottle of LubeGard Red (not black) ATF Protectant is recommended.

Thanks for the info, the transmission was really my main concern.
