Putting axles in my 1998 Sentra 1.6, automatic. I've been gathering info. from this site and others, I've got a factory 98 manual but I'm still confused by a couple of things.

--Can I assume that this year of sentra is not affected by the problem whereby taking both axles out at the same time causes the side gear in the trans to slip out of position?

--Every description of the procedure I've seen has said to drain the trans first but oddly the factory manual does not mention it. I assume I most definitely need to do it?

--The special tool in the manual that is inserted into the axle seal seems to just be making sure you don'tdamage the seal. In no account I've read was the tool used so is everyone just being very careful not to damage the seal and not buying the $100! rubber tool?

Thanks, Larry

Correct. Do not buy the tool, just be careful not to damage the seal when installing the axle. You can remove both axles but if it were me, I would complete one side then do the other. You should drain the fluid or it could get messy. And remember not to hit the end of the axle directly with a hammer when installing, you may flare the end causing it to no longer fit into the hub. I use a urethane hammer. Good luck.
