1997 q45 runs and cut off

i have a 1997 q45t its runs and then cuts off it starts right back up. you can smell the gas burning and its smokes from time to time. The rpm is also idleing up and down. the rpm goes really low and somtimes cuts off ans omtimes it goes up to 2 and the just drops down and cut off. i only use premium gas in it .do you think its a gas problem because its burning the gas really bad. Yes i searched

My first guess would be the MAF (mass air flow sensor) - but that's only a guess.

Good guess, substitute a KNOWN GOOD MAF.

Start by checking the MAF connector. Not really a known problem on the VH41DE.

Maybe someone tried tocahnge the oil filter from the top.

would the MAF cause it to smoke also

If it failed in a mode that made the ECU think there was more air than there was passing through. Not sure if that is even possible.
