A wonderful car with 36000 miles won't start! Noone can find the problem. No error codes, but starting timing appears to be to advanced. When it does start, drives and runs beautifully. Several mechanics including Dealer has given up on it! One post here indicates Nissan has reprogramed ECU to correct this in the Maxima. Is this true and if so, what would be the new part number or date of manufacture I should look for? At my age, I thought it would be the last car I would own and would love to have it last! I haven't seen anything I like better!

The dealership should be able to reflash the ECU. Without it throwing codes, it is hard to say. Has the crank and cam sensors been checked? That is where I would start.

Yes, buddy thought he found a bad LED on the cam sensor, but that didn't help. What do you mean by "reflash" the ECU (I'm no mechanic). Reprogram? Supposedly the Dealer tried a new ECU.

Yes, reflash = reprogram.

So what exactly does it do when it doesn't want to start? Does the starter crank normally? Does the motor turn over? Does it spit or sputter like it's trying to start? Do you smell gas after trying to start it? What all has the dealer checked?

It always cranked, Hard start was several cranks, then missfire or even back fire. Very rarely start was fine if engine warm, but not consistant. Usually a short wait before trying again I could get it started.

Supposedly injectors, plugs, fuel pump, etc were all checked. I understand mechanics except all this new fangled electron mess thrown in.

The first Master Mechanic (locally) literally gave up a year and a half ago after three weeks and trucked it up to the dealer. Dealer blamed prior work, got it running, but didn't completly resolve it. This time Dealer gave up after three weeks, claiming "unrepairable!" My buddy did a complete examination of harness and entire system for shorts. He's stuborn and likes problem solving. He's the fourth attempt.
