1996 I30 engine replacement

I'm debating getting a new/used engine for my 96 I30. Does it have to come from a same generation Maxima/I30 (95-99) or will the (00+) drop in as well. A quick search makes it seem that the latter are easier to find than the engines from my generation. Any guesses how much this might cost? What is the normal book time for this swap? I don't need a new engine...realistically one that would last 3-6 more months till I'm ready to buy a new car.
