Hello All;

I've been lurking in these forums since March of this year when I boughtmy 1995 Q. I didn't notice the symptom at first, but now do.

The car has 130K on the clock.

I have "used the power of the search button" and have found problems that come close to what my Q is doing, but yet do not match exactly for a 1995Q.

When I first start the car and drive, the problem is not noticable; only after the engine temp gauge is at 3 o' clock.

The symptoms:

When starting from a dead stop (red light etc.) I gently accelerate and feel a funky vibration. It seems to last until I'm out of second gear.

If I gun the accelerator, I still feel the vibration, but obviously, as the car exits second gear faster, the vibration ends faster.

The vibration is most pronounced from a dead stop going up an incline.

The vibration is not in the steering wheel; more like...well, I'm not sure; seems like from under the car towards the front.

Passengers generally do not notice the vibration; though I suspect any of you would were you riding with me.

Something else I noticed today that has not previously happened:While sitting at a red light there was enough vibration to make somethingin the defrost vents at the bottom of the windshield rattle. When I put the car in neutral, the vibration settled down and the rattle disappeared. Back into Drive and the vibration/rattle started up again. This was intermittent in my drive around town.

The previous owner did all kinds of nifty stuff (bilstein engine oil flushes, transmission flushes etc) really pretty regularly.

The only thing it appears that he didn't do was replace motor mounts when the dealer recommended it.

The other symptom is after I've been at speeds above 45 or get a little happy with the accelerator on the freeway, when I'm at a stop again (red light) or park the car, I smell what smells like burning grease or ???

I wish I were a gear head, but alas, don't have it in me, so will likely take the car to Jerry Tucker (as many on this board seem pretty positive about their work).

What I would like to do is change the air filter (after all these fires we had here). Could someone recommend a brand and source to buy one from?

Thanks :D

Vibration could very well be the mounts. Can't go wrong with factory air filter. Call Joe at Scottsdale 1-888-216-5328 if you're going to be buying more than just the filter. He's cheap compared to dealers, doesn't collect sales tax, and surface shipping is very reasonable.

Jerry T @ AIS is quite a resource as we don't have easy access to T3 and "Dennis, Da Maestro" out here - building up a relationship w/Jerry is probably the kindest thing you could do for your Q.

FYI - my first time @ Jerry's was outstanding as they did a bumper to bumper diagnosis over a couple of hours to spec all that was needed - the price was so low I'm embarrassed by it - so my heartiest recommendation to all S. CA Q dogs is to patronize “those who know” - and rest assured, they are so competent they will send you out to other high end specialist w/expertise if it is better done elsewhere (such as Clarence Brown on front suspension anomalies)

Just consider this one more thumbs up for our own West Coast T3

Driving my mother's car?

I don't think so; I'd be in the Mercury Sable forum if that were the case (and that would not be good).

Thank you, each that has responded.

I've discussed the symptoms with Tom @ Jerry Tucker AIS and will be bringing the car in for their diagnosis/repair on Thursday.

Still, of course would welcome any other ideas as to the symptoms initially posted.

Couple of ideas, The slight vibration could be a Bad injector, Spark plug or weak coil, but I'm leaning towards the Exhaist mounts on the rear of the gearbox. I removed mine & cleared up some similar vibrations. I'm sure the guys you are taking it to will find the proble.

As for the burning smell, it sounds like a Valve Cover leaking oil onto the exhaust.

After being serviced by Jerry Tucker AIS, here are the findings:

Burning Grease Smell:

Was actually oil. The valve cover gaskets are leaking.

Vibration in 1st and 2nd gear:

The rear transmission mount was replaced. The vibration problem has not occured since picking up the car on Monday.

Thanks to all who suggested a direction to look in the above problems.

$206.00 parts 'n labor for the transmission mount.

Just under $500.00 parts and labor is the quote to change the valve covergaskets.
