1995 Nissan 240sx Small Block Chevy Build Thread

V8 240sx? Sure! If either the chassis OR the engine is non-Nissan (i.e. SR20 in an RX-7 or LS1 in a 240sx), we've done it.

Ok, So I have been slacking on this for awhile, and I need to bring up a build thread (long term), because I am getting to the point now where people might actually be interested as opposed to just skipping over and on to the next thread.

This is not my first time on NICO I promise, I have always been kind of a troll and recently my old username got messed up when NICO switched to the new setup, not worried about it. I live in the KC area and try to represent the NICO club well. I am going to try my best to give you guys accurate part numbers, prices, and current updates every time I work on the car. As for the car, it is a 1995 240sx SE came with leather, ABS, sunroof, 5 lug :-) the works. However now that I have managed to rip out the old KA auto engine, it is time for some much needed love that the previous owner did not give it. I hope you guys enjoy, and I am completely open to suggestions. E.G. what I did wrong, what I need to do, what cool parts I should add, or if you think i am a total idiot thats o.k. with me too, just keep it to yourself.

Happy Building! :bigthumb:

Here are a couple of my pictures from when I got the car. It is O.K., not exactly my style and fit and finish is a little rough.

Image
^My tires are no longer stretched like skinny jeans on fat chick^
Image
^The rear, soon to get rid of the altezza, kinda cheesy for my taste.
Image
^Side-boob^

My 95' has been a little bit of a pain. She is just over 140,000 miles and with virtually no maintenance besides oil changes and an abused past, she needs a transplant.

Here is the meat and gravy of what I got so far:
(I will make seperate post in thread with complete parts list and prices!)

Chevy Small Block 350 bored .060 over; 358ish?!!!
Stock rods
Stock Timing Chain
Crankshaft cleaned up and resurfaced to .010 on mains and rods
Mahle .060 Flat top pistons
Mckinney Motorsports Motor and Transmission mounts (4 speed tranny)
Mckinney Motorsports S14 Oil Pan holds 8 quarts
King Main and Rod Bearings
Federal SB Gasket Set
Aluminum Heads, Flow very very good. (Japanese accent implied)
Camshaft 525/515 estimated lift. lumpy.
Felpro Headgaskets super thin aiming for 10:1 compression

Some pics:
Image
^Stock rods with a 2 bolt main should be o.k. for my power goal^
Image
Image
^Flat top pistons; Compression!^
Image
^Mckinney Oil Pan^

Had a little half day project today, didn't turn out perfect, but much better than they were before. All I used was mother's chrome polish that I got at O'reilly's for five dollars, a terry cloth rag, and a lot of time and elbow grease. Probably the best five bucks I've ever spent on my car. Don't mind the bad alignment and messed up bumper, thats what happens when your the victim of a hit and run. If you do this, which I highly recommend, make sure you wax them after because the clear will last a lot longer. Yellow tint in the headlights is caused by sunlight and most car wax's if not all resist the suns damaging rays which helps them stay clearer longer.

Let me know what you guys think.

^Done and on the car^

Here are some pics with the heads on and a little bit of work done to the motor. There are some good cell phone pics of the mckinney pickup which is very well made and the clearance was perfect, kudos to them.

^Welcome to the goody room!^
Image
^Heads on! Gold milodon timing cover, my color scheme is black, white, and gold. I said why not? lol^
Image

^Comp Magnum Roller Rockers! HP! Not yet set correctly, just put them on so I could put the mckinney pickup on^
Image
^Brand new melling oil pump, Pickup sits at a perfect 3/8 pan clearance^
Image
Image
^here is a pick of the inside of the pan for you, no windage tray, just "oil flow doors" (technical lingo)^
Image
^Edelbrock Torquer II Intake manifold. I cleaned it with aluminum prep from walmart and then sprayed it with a fresh coat. I thought it turned out pretty good. You should have seen how much oil was caked on that piece, :nono:

Here are some random part pictures, again they are s*** cell phone quality taken in my dark garage at 330 am

^Ram Clutch; very highly respected quality stuff in the muscle car world^

^Ram Clutches Hydraulic release bearing! very nice!^

^Very sexy Taylor Aluminum Trunk Mount Battery Box, Mmmmmm^

^Good ol' Flywheel^

^Brand New Starter^

^Power Steering Rack bushings, I did these because I heard it was one of the best things to do for the car^
Image
^Electric Water Temp Gauge; Autometer Procomp #5437^
Image
^Tachometer; Autometer Promcomp #5161^

And last but not least close to how the car sits at the moment,
Image
I have done some cleanup since that picture and am trying to get prepped for possible paint. I am going for a white, black, and gold accents color scheme. Let me know if you have any ideas of what color to paint or powdercoat certain parts. I will try my best to get new pictures up this weekend.

Again if there are any Questions? Comments? Ideas? Don't be afraid to help a forum member out! :dblthumb:

Sorry its been awhile guys, but the snow is melting and I can resume the build! :ohsnap
Makes me really wish I had a clean, organized, indoor shop where I could work all year long. Unfortunately the homes association won't even let me keep it up on jack stands overnight LMAO! So dumb. Anyways......

Just got this bad boy in from rigidracing.com I highly suggest it for someone who is going to run a wilwood master cylinder
Image
Parts make me soooo excited! I get so uhm nervous, its gunna be a good spring! :ohno:

Parts list will be updated within the next couple days, homework has to come first :tisk:

What do you guys think?

That was my original plan, but when I have access to dirt cheap SB parts through friends and I work for an automotive wholesaler that specializes in old muscle car parts and circle track parts, i couldn't resist that employee discount, lol. In the future an LS swap is definately in the cards. :naughty:

Going to update parts list today.

A couple more goodies that came today!
Image
^Lower Shift boot to keep the crud out and the clutch master cylinder^

I will be using a wilwood clutch master cylinder with an adapter, as shown above, but I need to use the stock rod out of a 240sx clutch master in order to be able to attach it to the clutch pedal assembly :bigthumb:

Got some gauges and a front bumper on the way!

Clutch Pedal Assembly Arrived today thanks to a Nico member!

Also ordered a wilwood clutch master cylinder today.

My 93 however spun a bearing and pretty sure destroyed the head, so some funds have to shoot that way for a lil bit ugh. Hopefully I can piece something together out of spare parts and a rebuild kit. Its just time and money right? no big deal :squint:

Also, I have no idea if anybody cares about this build, but I'll post anyway

I don't have exact specs on the cam. It actually came out of a circle track car, so it is very lumpy. I believe high .500's in the lift and duration, but I could be wrong. I'll try and find/post them today.

The heads are Patriot Performance 190cc runners with 64cc chamber. With the head gasket i am running should be about 10:1. :bigthumb:
Should be a pretty stout motor. Also have some roller rockers on that head. I know the cam almost max's the springs in the head.

the lift is .510in/.533ex, duration at .50 is 244/250 and standard duration is 310/320 lobe separation angle is 112, that small block is gonna have A LOT more tourque than that KA, you'll be snapping axles in no time.... at first then  then this  then this

Has anybody tried SBC headers for an S10 yet? Just curious they look like a decent possibility. The only ones I have seen work are the 95-96 impala headers; Part Number: 2063HKR

The last of the gauges for now. Still need to pick up a programmable fuel level gauge. All gauges are going to be custom mounted in the stock position, custom molded.

have you measured the hood clearance yet?
when I had a vic Jr manifold (smaller one, not the one that is an inch taller), holley carb and low profile procharger carb hat ,
all sat about 3 inches above the top of hood. my oil pan is about 3/8 above the xmember.
i am assuming it will not fit under the hood ,
curious if anyone has seen a carb'd motor fit under the stock hood yet? and what was done to make it happen.

I haven't had a chance at all to get to hood clearance. From what I have seen, which isn't much, all I see is people putting the largest single plane intake or high rise manifold they can find. I have Mckinney Motorsports engine mounts, so I am not sure about the powersteering clearance yet, but I'll let you know when I find out. I put on the edelbrock torquer II, because it is a low profile, single plane (hp), intake that has pretty much the lowest clearance you can find. Then I have a carb, then I am going to run a recessed 1" air filter. I am hoping that gets me enough. Like I said, I have never seen anyone with as low of a setup as me, and never seen someone make hood clearance, so we will have to see what happens.

I am currently in the stages of rebuilding my 1993 240sx, so all the work that I wanted to do over spring break to the SB had to go to that silly little KA (jk I love it). I am trying to update as much as possible, and will definately have some pictures of the motor in very soon. Have to go through the engine harness first :tisk: But other than that, what do you think?

I'm in Colorado on Spring Break skiing, so both projects are on hold :slap:

contacting rigidracing about one of those plates.
I made mine the first time and it is too thin. the cost sure beats the time and money to build a new one myself that is more durable.

good luck

What plate are you referring too? the clutch master cylinder adapter? Thats the only item I have seen for sale from rigidracing, and the only item I have purchased.

Thanks for the luck, hopefully I won't be needing any..... just $$$ :chuckle:
