1993 Sentra SE-R Tips?

Hey Everyone,

I'm checking out a '93 SE-R tomorrow and wanted your advice.

It's black with a grey cloth interior. 101K miles. 2.0 4 cyl. 5-speed. Asking price is $3999. The guy said if I bring cash or can write a check, he'd drop the price down to $3500. He's a dealer here in So Cal.

I'm going to check it out tomorrow. All I've seen are some fuzzy pics. But it looks clean. He says it drives great and the only apparent mods are a K&N CAI filter and a 6pk clutch? Not sure what that means.

So, tell me. What should I be looking for? What are the tell-tale signs it's an actualy SE-R. I know, it would be lame to tart up a bland Sentra and pass it off as an SE-R. Very little return, I guess. But, I'm just being cautious.

Let me know. I'm looking for a fun to drive little bugger to zip around town in.

Price is a beat steep IMHO. Rust was a common problem with the SE-R's. Check for 5th gear pop out as well. I still don't know why someone would put a 6 puck clutch disc in a NA SE-R. The 6 puck is designed to handle more power, which is overkill for this particular car. Hell I got a 6 puck in mine and it has 300 whp. Check a/c and make sure all the HVAC controls work properly. The main way to tell if the car is a SE-R is the motor. SR20DE, 16valve 2.0 liter motor. Check for torn axles boots, oil leaks especially around the valve cover gasket and any transmission leaks. That should cover all the basics for now.

If it don't look like this, it is not a real se-r.

I'll definitely check for those things. If it does have a 6-puck clutch, how would I know? Would that not solve the 5th gear pop out? What causes the 5th gear to pop out anyway?

What areas are prone to rust?

Is there a VIN designation for the SE-R? Or code? Where is that? Anyway to tell if the motor is original?

Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to cover all the bases.

No the 6 puck disc will not solve the 5th gear pop out issue. It's just an issue that most if not all 91-early 94 model se-r's will have or had. The only fix is to use a 5sp transmission from either the 200sx se-r or 94+ infiniti g20.

There's even a silver placard on the firewall of the engine bay with information about that particular car. It would show the VIN number, engine designation, chassis designation, color code, etc.

Most areas prone to rust are the rear fenders, door jams and rocker panels.

Unfortunately most deals turn out that way when dealing with a "classic" se-r.

RED_DET thats a sweet SE-R im pickin up a B13 soon but its a four door.
