I have a 1992 Nissan pickup with 4 wheel drive and KA24E engine. I have removed the cylinder head and now need to get to the piston rings. Can I do this without removing the engine? Manuals I have read seem to say that I can remove the oil pan by lifting the engine a little in the mounts and removing the stabilized bar. With the 4 wheel drive, it look like there is still a lot of stuff in the way.

Yeh the 4wd part will make it very tough to get the pan out. Must drop front axle.

Thanks. I am not sure what it takes to drop axle and then get the suspension back together right. In your opinion, is it easier to drop axle or remove engine?

I just have a 2wd but it would make life a lot easier for you if you pull it. A few bell housing bolts, 4 for the motor mount, coolant lines and vacuum lines. Plus assembly on a engine stand is much easier, your not hanging over the edge all the time. For me it makes prep time and assembly of the long block a lot easier. I never liked honing a cylinder with the engine in the truck. IMO
