Remove the battery, drain the coolant, remove the upper radiator hose, then the egr tube from exhaust header, then the exhaust header, the intake manifold, the fan belts, clutch fan, valve cover, timing chain cover, mark the cam gear and timing chain, pull the cam gear DO NOT let the timing chain fall, tie it off to the side so it doesnt slip, remove the head bolts and grab a rubber mallet to knock the head loose.

When you start to put it back together use a new headgasket, maybe a metal one, NEW head bolts.. you do not want to tear this back down and replace the head gasket again for a snapped or stretched old bolt. oops did that timing chain slip? go ahead and remove the crank pulley, water pump, lower timing cover, inspect the timing belt guides and tensioner, if its old it may have been grinding away at a water passage already. A new timing chain might be a good idea too as I am sure its probably never been changed and over 120k miles, get your timing marks right and reinstall the chain and button it up, go ahead and change the water pump too, this is a good time for it.

reinstall all of the peices following the FSM torque specs This is probably just a rough outline read the FSM before attempting as there may have been something I missed and i am sure there is more detail to the steps than I typed

Kind of a *****, I'd take off the hood first thing so you have easier access to the back of the motor.

Kraelic got it though, basically everything has to come off.

As far as headgasket choice, I would just get another stock one, or a fel-pro one. The only metal hg available is a copper one from SCE, and you most likely don't need it.
