I have a 1989 nissan hardbody v6 manual transmission that is having surging/stutterin problems. This is how it went. I got a jump today after leaving my foglights on all day (battery completely drained). After connecting for just under 30 seconds the truck was able to be started. I left and noticed that while trying to accelerate the truck would go for a little then "fall over on itself" cut out a little (it would never die just not rev) kinda like a dead spot. I had to class and noticed that if I keep the rpms high (stupid I know but being a student I had to make it to class for a test) that it would drive pretty well. The main times when it would show problems would be at the low rpm ranges when shifting to a new gear or coming from a light.

I have read that the distributor "eye" could be the problem or the throttle positioning sensor could also be the culprit.

Thanks so much for anyone that even reads this long post for helping.

Nicholas

or the egr valve or a vacuum leak. Get a fog machine and a disco ball and check for a vacuum leak.

Taken from the manual:

Faulty Throttle Position Sensor circuit: Throttle position is determined based on the injected fuel amount and the engine speed. When engine is idling = Normal engine sounds with smooth operation.

When accelerating = Poor acceleration, engine hesitation, stuttering until the RPM's pick up.

See if you can get a free code scan from your local parts supplier to confirm the issue. TPS units aren't exactly cheap.

I have seen the V6 TPS cause a hesitation when at certain road speeds because of the wiper/resistor design. It will wear in one spot causing a short out.

Ok, weirdest thing today I jumped in the truck and it ran perfect without a hitch. No stuttering or surging. I was actually going to take it to the mechanic but decided not to. Thanks everyone for trying to help I called my local auto part stores to price the parts and it would have been a fortune.

On another topic how do you know if you need to change the timing belt is it just a mileage thing or is there a way to check it?
