Just called my dealership and they want about $300 for the premium servicing which includes tire rotation, break check, alignment check, reset of stuff to factory specs?, in-cabin micro filter replacement and all kinds of other stuff above and beyond the schedule 1 maintenance which would be around $150.

Personally, I think the $300 is pretty steep and need your opinions on whether or not it is worth paying for @ 15,000 miles. Or, should I just with the schedule 1 maintenance for the $150?

I've stayed with the factory schedule, which is one reason I have my favorite mechanic do it instead of the Nissan dealer. (Besides the price!) Nissan wanted to skip some things on the schedule (like the micro filter, which was quite dirty by 15k) and wanted to add others. I tell my mechanic to let me know if he thinks anything beyond the schedule needs done, and it's done well for me for several cars taken to up to 240k. I expect the Versa to get there soon enough, too!

Nothing personal about it. $300 is very steep for what amounts to an oil change, tire rotation and cabin filter. Unless you drive the crap out of the car, brakes will have a long way to go. Look at your tires. Are they wearing unevenly? Does the car steer to one direction or shake? If not, an alignment is most likely not needed. Tires very rarely ever need to be re-balanced unless you throw a weight off.

I am fast approaching 15k. I will inspect and rotate the tires myself. $0I will change the oil myself (Nissan filter + Valvoline) $14I will look into replacing the cabin filter $? Shouldn't be more than $25 based on price for cabin filter on my Toyota.

Cabin filters range around $20 to $40. At my place where I work our 15K includes:Oil Change, Rotate and balance tires, battery service, change air filter, scan for any codes for about $200-$220. I work in Gaithersburg,MD. Not that it really matters though.

I could probably buy a decent code scanner for $100. I have free coffee at home.

$209 CDN plus parts. Seems like a lot of money for a visual inspection. How long does it take?

I agree on the need for an oil change, rotate tires, and possibly a cabin filter. My other two vehicles have a service interval of 30k for cabin filter and engine air filter. When I changed them at 30k, they were not very dirty at all. If the car is getting close to a year old, new wipers would be good for safety reasons.

I have no idea what a battery service is. I have been told many times that I should have this done on my Toyota. Total BS. Perhaps the battery has some corrosion and should be cleaned. Get some baking soda. Read up on the internet how to do this if really necessary.

The scan for codes service? Most folks probably drive their cars everyday. What is the car telling you? There are three ways the car can communicate to a driver that is listening, if anything is wrong. 1. A check engine light or other idiot light comes on. I would suspect that if there is an error serious enough to be detected in a scan, that the CEL would come on. I am not a mechanic so this may not always be the case.2. Performance changes. An attentive driver should be on the lookout for any changes; noises, power loss, rough idle or other vibrations.3. Fuel economy. Measure and track your fuel economy. If something is going wrong it will often times show up with reduced fuel economy.

If none of these issues are going on, why pay to scan it? Stated another way, I am very suspicious of "services" that you can't verify somehow that they were actually done. I can look at my tires and tell they are on different corners. I can pull my dipstick and see new oil. (plus I do these services myself - which I realize is not always an option)

Read your manual. Listen to what your car is telling you. Tell the service department what you want done to your vehicle. Don't buy their inflated unneccessary services. Especially on a new (15k) car.

Just my opinion.

Ah, but do you then void your warranty?

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but when you rotate the tires, you simply put the fronts on the back, and visa versa. Something that you could do yourself if you have two jacks.

today i got our versa serviced near its 15k miles mark. they asked me if i wanted the special 15k-mile service and i said yes... until he told me it was $240!!

it includes oil/filter change, air filter change, in-cabin filter changed, fuel filter changed, and tires rotated...

i said thanks but no thanks. i bought an air filter from the parts dept for $14. they didn't have any cabin air filters (wonder if they would have told me that?)...

fuel filter isn't even in the service manual as needing to be changed.

i'll rotate the tires myself.

i got the $26 oil change. they even put the filter in for me for free.

It will work just fine with one jack but will require a little more work. Start by taking out your spare tire. This is a great time to check the spare. It is not uncommon to find that you will need to add a little air to the spare. The temp spare is supposed to be inflated to 60 psi. You can simply install the spare on the first corner that you take the tire off. Then swap it out.

Or you can skip the spare and use a jackstand.

Be sure and closely inspect your tires for uneven wear which could indicate a balance or alignment problem (which should be obvious from the way the car drives). And look for any nails or other problems with the tire that may not always be obvious.
