Hey guys and gals. Just had my dealer look at my brakes since there was a little vibration during hard breaking. It felt like premature rotor warp. They decided to turn the rotors instead of putting new ones on, whats up with that? Are break rotors not warranteed for sometime?

Unless they completely shatter or break off or something the $tealership won't cover them on warranty. Its an item on a car that is supposed to wear down, they kinda use that as an excuse, as well as possibly using the driver as being too hard on them.

Picked up versa sl cvt last week. Drove 10 miles applied brakes and had a hard vibration in the steering wheel. Drove right back to dealer and into the service dept. They told me when a car sits on the lot a long time the rotors may rust and or warp. The dealer couldn't have treated me better. They took the car right in and replaced the rotors no discussion, just apologies. I guess it is up to the dealer

rotors will only warp from extreme heat. Did it get really hot on the dealers lot? Like 1200 degrees?

Actually thats not true. Many cars already have 10-15 miles on them before they even get to the dealership. So 1) Someone could have abused the brakes before you go the car. 2) Could be a factory defect. 3) Could be rust or debris from the car sitting from long periods of time, example, solidified brake dust... 4) Could also be bad hardware in the caliper. If the caliper isnt in contact with the rotor the same all the time, you can warp, or mildly disfigure the rotors pretty quick.

The warrenty on Wear Items is explained as: during proper driving, if a premature failure is found in a wear item, it will be replaced under warrenty. However, Who decides proper driving? Best thing to do is if you buy a new car, dont settle for OEM parts. First things i always replace are: pads, rotors, brake lines, Endlinks, D bushings, Battery ground cable, Exhaust ground Cable, Oil drain plug, and install a transmission drain plug.

Why do i go through all that hassle? Simple, OEM parts are made for casual drivers. I live and work in New York, there is Nothing Casual here. Besides, usually aftermarket parts are better and cheaper then OEM parts.

Now your gonna say a lack of Aftermarket parts for the Versa, Thats not true either, you just gotta know where to look, and what cars have compatable parts. Slotted rotors, Hawk Pads, earls stainless steel brake lines, Energy suspension endlink and D bushings, Fram oil plug, And some high grade Audio wire is all you need for that type of work.

I dunno about you, but a lot of us here ARE casual drivers. 1000 miles is an unacceptable amount of time for a set of rotors to warp in, unless you're doing the 24 Hours of LeMans in your car...

My brakes started vibrating/grinding around oh, 15k or so miles. I've got an appointment with my dealer next week to look at this as well as a couple other things.

If they're warped, I'm hoping to get the dealer to cover them under warranty. If not, I drive them for a while longer while I pick a better aftermarket brake.

Odd this comes up around 15,000 miles. I just had my 15,000 servicing on Monday and have been noticing a vibration in the brake pedal, only when at a full stop, that wasn't there before. The vibration goes away if I put the car into park or reverse. I haven't noticed any performance problems with the brakes otherwise (grinding, shudder when slowing etc.). I found another thread on here that was pretty much the same problem and they discovered a cracked motor mount @ 15,000.

I'll be contacting the dealer here soon. Is it reasonable to share that thread with them or do they tend to get irritated by non-professionals trying to self-diagnose the problem? I'm not much of a car/mechanical/fix-it person, so attending to these things always wigs me out a bit.

When I got my car in November it had 47 miles on it. I experienced the same vibratiion under hard braking. After 1000 miles or so it went away. I attributed it to the pads not being bedded in correctly.

Not all service professionals appreciate seeing threads like that, because to them it is like being showed up by an amateur. A GOOD service professional will keep their mind open about things like this. It's probably best to show the thread to the service adviser/writer or service manager, not to a mechanic directly.

Unfortunately, it sounds like cracked motor mounts are disturbingly common on the Versa. I wonder if they will issue a TSB on it...

Alright, in an attempt to figure out what's going on before going to the dealer, tonight I did a little experimenting. I had my wife drive the Versa and she also noticed a difference in the brake pedal vibration. When we got home, I had her remain as the driver while I got out to take a peak under the hood. I opened the hood and illuminated the engine compartment with my flashlight, I then had her shift from drive to park. I noticed that when in park, there was generally less vibration in the engine compartment. When she put it in drive, however, the vibration increased, but not to the point where I could detect anything rattling around excessively.

I noticed something else though that kind of weirded me out. When she shifted from park to drive, the entire engine block would move about a quarter of on inch toward the dash (as opposed to toward the grill). It would then shift back a quarter on an inch to its starting position when shifted into park. Is this normal when a vehicle is shifted from park to drive? Maybe it's nothing and I AM a bit car stupid, but that seemed strange to me.

Thoughts, feelings, concerns?

Another question, when I got the 15,000 servicing, I basically watched the tech do everything though a big glass window they have between the waiting area and the maintenance bays. Anyway, I noticed that when he changed out the air filter, it looked like he was having a tough time getting the plastic filter cover back on. Is it possible that he used excessive force to push the thing on and that in turn tweaked a mount somewhere?

I'm just speculating at this point, but I recall cringing a bit when I noticed that.

I'm taking the Versa into the dealership regardless and wouldn't be likely to mention that, but being a bit neurotic and worried about this sort of stuff, being armed with information would help.
