This car is falling apart all at once. 185k miles. 4 codes thrown today.

P0740 - Torque Converter and open selinoid
P0171 - Bank 1 Fuel System Too lean (what does trhis mean?)
p0174 - Band 2 Lean (again, what does this mean?)
p0134 - Front O2 Sensor

I have 3 oil seapages (not full blown leaks) according to my mechanic. Valve cover gasket, timing chain cover gasket and oil pan gasket. Changed plugs today, but still have that sluggish response when going up a hill or trying to get on it and pass someone. I suspected Knock Sensor but the code didn't come up.

Need help guys. Can any of these fixes be made and are they worth it? I'd like to keep the car a while longer but I don't want to dump alot into it. The main issue is the loss of power and sluggishness.

Any ideas, thoughts?

P0740 - should be looked at by a transmission specialist (check fluid level of course).

P0171 and P0174 - could be clogged/weak injectors or a vacuum leak. Lean means it's not getting enough fuel. Rich would be too much fuel. Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has the #1 cylinder (side closest to the firewall). Bank 2 is the side with the #2 cylinder (side closest to the radiator).

P0134 - bank 1 O2 sensor will actually be on the rear exhaust manifold.

Without knowing exactly what is wrong and how much it'll cost to fix, it's hard to say if the fixes are worth it. I'd say the transmission issue would likely be the most expensive.

the p0740 code came up a few years ago and the mechanic said as long as the car isn't shutting off at idle i should be ok. so far so good on that one i guess.

I tried cleaning the MAF yesterday to correct part of the 0171 and 0174 problem and it really messed it up. I plan to replace the MAF this morning and see if it can at least get it back to where it was. Any advice on the injectors? Do these normally just need to be replaced of can they be cleaned?

replaced MAF sensor and all power has been restored to what feels like original levels. no hesitation when pedal pushed. She's responding and responding very well at even lightest touch. One problem down.

See how the new MAF works, that could have caused the lean condition.

As for injector cleaners, BG44K has always been a good product, but evidently they changed the formulation. Red Line makes an injector cleaner that is very popular.

Max I will have the codes reset and checked again later today. I probably need to replace the injectors anyway, right? Looks like an easy fix for a novice like me.

How may miles on your J? Gas mileage been a little low lately? The codes could be telling you to replace the oxygen sensors.

185K MILES on I30t. I could replace the O2 sensors as well, but do i need to if the power is back without ANY hesitation? Gas mileage hasn't been tested in a year or more and it was between 19-21 in city depending on ethanol or non-ethanol gas usage.

Get the codes reset like you said, and see what codes come back. It may take a day or two of driving. If the O2 code comes back I would replace it like goody suggested. I wouldn't replace the injectors unless you know there is a problem with them.

sounds good Max. Do you think the bad MAF would cause the other sensors to read bad if it being the first one in the system is reading bad?

Not likely.
