I think I've found what i needed... doing a little research in a few Aussie forums, I've come to discover not all camshaft manufacturers (that make cams for the rb25) produce cams with VVT in mind. I know Tomei and HKS make some that let you keep VVT.
With that in mind... I've come to find that the biggest duration isn't always the best... performance wise, it's better to have a larger *lift* than *duration*.
I'm still not clear on the factory lift of rb25 cams, but i do know stock duration is 240* and an rb26dett stock duration is 248*.
I have also read the largest lift on a cam you should get for an rb25 is 9.00mm ... Go larger than that and it would be a good idea to die grind the head.
Since I couldn't find any camshaft suppliers here in the USA i have looked to the land of the rising sun for answers... two major websites that I've been going back and forth between were takakaira.com and greenline.com
Greenline.com has a deal... Tomei Poncams 256* 8.5mm lift (in/ex) 573.637US 256* is ideal for a mild street upgrade, allow you to keep stock valve train (not trying to go into high rev ranges) and these Tomei cams allow you to keep VVT as well.
HKS offers 256* in 8.8MM IN and a 264* 9.00MM EX @ takakaira.com ...but unlike greenline.com you have to purchase these cams separately at about $351 a piece.
Trying to decide which would be a better investment... the extra lift on the exhaust and little bit more duration... or save the $200
Either way i know since I'm not going to an extreme lift i won't be replacing my valve train so it's not going to be a significant gain in power.... but on the other hand... every little bit helps. Any thoughts?????
