Im getting an oil change tomorrow (m1 oil with OEM filter) and id like to know if its OK to drive like 2 miles tops with the stuff in... It says to let it run for 10-15 mins, but doesnt say you can or cant drive...

basiclaly what ill be doing is driving it to someones house (who will take me to the place), then I drop the car off...

So I would get the car fully warmed, then add the stuff, idle for about 5-7 mins, then drive for about 5 mins, and then have a little extra time to let it idle..... Ill leave it run since its supposed to be drained when HOT..

Also, on a mildly varnished engine, is a full can good or just half can...

Shouldn't hurt. Stay out of the throttle, and use the whole can.

Just so everyone knows, this castrol stuff is NOT golden approved... I cant find it anymore (they had it a month ago at the zone).. ABout 4k on the current fill and its very brown...

Thats OK though, its my way of telling myself its OK to do an oil change anyway....

Obviously will keep out of the throttle (less than 2000 RPM, will stay at about 40mph or less)..

Wait till the Q is warmed up 5-10 minute before pouring it in then drive to oil change location, then don't shut it off till on the rack as the varnish will start to resettle somewhere else.

Quick Clean is more a devarnisher [HLA and roller rockers -sweeky noises] since very low evaporation temperature vs say a purge [kerosene and pine tar oil] for sludge.........in 10-15-20 minutes of driving ,ost of the QC will have evaporated and out thru PCV into cylinder.

I always make sure there is some BG oil conditioner in oil with QC but I always use this in oil just in case [zinc extreme pressure additives to supplement low zinc in oils now[EPA requirement to extend cat life but my cats have had a good run with 271k now]..........lucky I don't have emission testing as they are on the raggged edge and my testing would be in January [hard to pass when cold outside].

Techs hate working on hot engine.........a $5-10 tip is in order to cover the burn creame.

Got it done today.. howver i had to shut the engine off after about 15mins of running, then it was restarted, ran for about 2 mins (tops) and then placed on the rack... I think it still did some good, as its not that big of a deal since the engine isnt that dirty to begin with....

I think ill just start doing this every oil change, maybe only a half can once clean.. Joe carries it for $6/can.....

Just note that BG Quick Clean for Engines carries a mandantory requirement that you use with BG Oil Conditioner during its use to protect the bearings or only a idle without the conditioner.

If you don't have HLA/cam noises once every year is enough with 90 day oil changes.

So does that mean the only way to try to clean sludge is the envirolution? The BG stuff is just for varnish?

Envirolution does nothing for sludge... nothing does anything for sludge, thats the bottom line..... Really not much to remove sludge, except take the engine apart....

BG quick clean is about as safe as it gets, and it removes the stuff in 1/10 the time it took to deposit...

I saw no difference with envirolution.. NONE, ill take off a valve cover to verify... Waste of money IMHO.. PRobably good for the perfectionist with a little bit of varnish, but BG quick clean seems to do a good enough job.....

So IMHO unless your engine is VERY clean and you intend on making it spotless, envirolutoin is a waste of money... BG quick clean would probably do the same thing that this does..... MAYBE another reason I could see using an envirolution is when you get the guides done, and you have all major big pieces, but there are still some little pieces... Those caught in the strainer would be backflushed, and i could see some benefit there...

however, i heed your words dennis and ill just stick to it every year.. I would assume mobil 1 should help clean things up the slighest amount.. But the varnish in my engine isnt anything to speak of really, just perfectionist things.. I dont have any noises and the oil light barely flickers...

Learning so much here. I think it's safe to assume that nothing special in the way of maintance has ever been done to my Q.

So, should are Wes and Dennis saying that once a year i should buy this "BG Quick Clean" to sorta clean up the varnish in my engine?

Really you shouldnt have to if you change the oil religiously.....

However varnish will usually accumulate even with the best OCIs... Its not really meant to clean a lot......

I'll keep it on a once a year basis... but with M1 you may not even not it..... however for a little dirtier engine its key.....

SOmething you need to remember when doing it..... to do it right you need to get the car really warm (drive for 15mins) and then add it.... Once you start with the stuff in, DO NOT turn off the car until you can immediately drain it... Also you dont want to run it very long, 15 mins being max...

What happens is it lifts the varnish and the stuff evaporates leaving the varnish behind... If you leave it in too long it will just deposit varnish somewhere else.....

I think it does about the same as a envirolution oil flush but only costs $6...
