Car: 94 Q45t w/TCS, 92 Q45 w/TCS, 91 Q45 touring (RIP)

Post

For the last 8 years I've been driving Q45s, starting with a 91 touring (RIP) and a 92 with TCS (187K). After my first Q without TCS in New England I spent a while looking to get just what I wanted, a 94 Q45t with TCS.

I am just so impressed by how nice this car is. It seems crazy I can buy so much car for such a low price. Since I got it I put my 16" wheels and Yokohama ES 100's on it. The car makes my daily commute through a 1800' mountain pass just so nice. The whole car drives tight.

A couple of things to fix, though:

- the rear shocks gotta go! I am considering a pair of Tokicos on the rear (but not on the front). I have driven a lowered Q and it felt too much like a skateboard for my taste. I need something that handles real world bumps, and I really haven't felt that the fronts were too soft. Decisions.

- I'll get a little bit of body work done, small damage on the rear bumper plus a few small dings.

- I'll change out the transmission mount - it is not too bad, but I just want to start fresh.

- The front left door locks do not work electrically, and niether does the center console window sitch for the FL window. Also the FL window motor does not stop when it reaches the end of travel up or down.

I am about to buy the FSM (yes, I've done a whole lot of work on my Q's over the years without one! Searches on NICO and infinitiownersclub have really helped!). There is an FSM on eBay for a '94. It measures 6" x 8" (small?) for $99 + shipping. If it is not much more I might just buy one thru Infiniti.

Meanwhile I really am unable to troubleshoot this electrical problem. Any ideas/ usual suspects on what it might be? Maybe I should just buy a bunch of door electrical components from elwesso and hope one of them fixes the problem?

As far as 90-93 versus the 94, I think the '94 is superior. With the touring model you get the quicker steering which I like (2.6 turns lock to lock versus 3.0 turns for the standard '94). With the tighter steering ratio this car feels tighter than my well driven '92. The lumbar support in the seats is a great improvement. And the airbag and seat belt pretensioners are a good addition that I hope to never use. And other odd improvements.

One recurring problem I have had is sloppy key cylinders. This time I will lubricate them continuously starting today.

Here is a picture of my two Q's.

I think the 94-95 Q's are the best blend. I didn't own a T, but I would think that would be the adding just a bit of creme to the coffee.

Welcome aboard!!

First of all, congrats on your Qs. Neat to have a 92 and a 94 owner!!!

RE shocks: On my old Q, i had the tokico blues with stock springs. This is what your looking for. my new Q has eibach springs and the tokicos, and it is a lot firmer, and handles better, but the ride of the old Q was far superior. Definitely I wouldnt do anything but blues all around, with stock springs, for a combination of better handling and a luxury car ride! Dont let other people fool you, the blues all around with stock springs is the way to go!!!! Ive driven a Q with stock shocks/springs, one with tokicos and stock springs, and one with tokicos and eibachs. The one with Tokicos and stock springs was by far the best ride and handling combination!! Its alittle firm while they break in, but after about 5k its GOLDEN!!!

Sounds like your window regulator is bad, and possibly the door module that controls the locks. we can do further diagnosis on that

FSM, email me and I'll hook you up (read: free)

After driven a myriad of 90-93s, 94 standard, and 94 touring, i like the touring the best.. It took me a while to get used to the firmer steering, but now I love it. That first 10* or so of the wheel actually does something! I alos like HICAS, as you can feel it sort of control on the virge of oversteer, I think....

We can work through your door locks together. Ill look at my FSM and see if we can get some diagnostic procedures down!

Wow, those Qs' look great. For some reason, I like the way the 94 looks more than the 92.

The 92 looks kind of dull. can you take a side by side picture of them right after they are both washed and waxed.

I really like the way the grill looks on your Q.

Congrats, on the new Q. I am on my second one, both 94, but this one is a "t" with the Super HICAS, and heated seats. No TCS, but the winters are quite mild, here in AL. The first one is Silver/Grey, and the "t" is Black/Black.

It sounds like the local control module. The regulator might be fine, it could be the controller, causing the problem. The alarm requires a confirmation of the door locks, to arm, and the console switches require the local control module, to control the windows.

I had this problem with the left rear door of the silver one. The module fixed it.

The diagnostic procedure is quite impressive. The FSM explains it completely.

You are lucky, there are a lot of Q's out there, being parted out right now.

Thanks for the welcomes...

As far as looks, I am still getting used to the grill. Somehow I liked the simple lower look of the '92 front end. Folks unfamiliar with old Q45s still mistake my '92 for a much newer car (as long as they don't look at the driver's seat leather). I was also unsure about liking the added chrome. It turns out my wheels which have smooth chrome only on the rims with painted centers really look good with the added chrome.

I'll get some better pictures snf figure out how to make them display better in my posts. It rained here.. just got our first rain in six months about a week ago, so the cars aren't actually clean. Both cars are dark green, though the '94 looks darker than the '92.

Be sure to get the TSB which supplement the FSM. Available at http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/infiniti/ .

Both greens are DJ2.

wes-

OK, I'll go for the Tokicos on the back. Even with new OEM shocks the back end has more bounce than I like. I'll drive it and see whether to do the fronts. I am still wondering why don't folks change their shocks when they are toast.

The electrical is tough, and I really appreciate the help. I tried trouble-shooting it with my multimeter - HA! I remember rewiring a '77 MG. Trouble shooting was simple, and so was the MG's electrical design. Too bad they put the fuses as the last component in the electrical circuit.

The problem is mostly on the passenger side door, but there are some other oddities that may not be related:

- front pass. door lock work only manually - window on front pass. door will not go up/down from center console. - When I open the driver's door, the interior dome and rear door lights come on, but not the front floor area lamps. All the other doors turn on all the lights. This is odd. - The two front dome lights with buttons don't work... probably the bulbs are blown, will check tonight.

both cars look to be in good shape. Every used car has a few small glitches, that's just part of getting old. Good luck on getting it all sorted out.

I wonder if maybe your BCU (body contro unit) is messed up... Theres alot of goofy things happening, but its also possible its just the passenger side control box thing.....

Paul.. We need to meet up sometime!

I looked throught the FSM. Without re-openning the doors up it looks like the "LCU-02", also known as the Window Control Unitis the only component that could cause my major symptoms.I think the interior light thing is seperate.

Where is the best place to pick up a used one for a '94?
