I have a 93 J30 that is very sluggish if you are accelerating from a stop. It hesitates off the line. You have to mash the accelerator to get it to move at all at first, but when it kicks in it really moves and you have to back way off on the accelerator.

It feels like the transmission isn't engaging right away. Another thing is that it will slip occasionally when shifting and then lurch forward when it engages.

I took it to my non-dealer mechanic and they thought it might be the transmission, but said that their computer can't read the codes because Infiniti blocks them. The engine codes check out fine, though.

The transmission has been machine flushed and had a pan drop when I bought the car six months ago. Didn't start having any problems till about a month ago. It has approximately 100K.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Independents always use the excuse [Infiniti doesn't block anything] when they don't have the correct test equipment to work on Nissans or other brands.

11 years old, probably worn out from previous abuse and not having flushes/drains every 3 years.

Check the flow thru rad cooler and pull pan and look for metal/change internal filter and ATF AGAIN!

Do a search for my transmission related threads.

Could be transmission solenoid or rev sensor. You basically have to drive the vehicle with the scan tool attached to get the code for either. The code normally never shows.

Or like Q45tech has stated could simply be a worn out transmission. The transmission on the J is known to have a shorter life in the warmer states.

Finally took it to the Infiniti dealer. Turns out that the throttle position sensor and crank timing sensor were both bad. It now runs like a dream.

DUH, obviously you previous mechanic was an idiot and not properly trained to deal with vehicles. Accept this and find someone else. If they don't have proper expensive test equipment it means they are not serious about the brand. As all of these things show up on rudimentary shop scanners [the ones used before OBD2] with a Nissan card.

Amazing how much time and money gets wasted by not going to a VEHICLE SPECIFIC SHOP or even the dealers.

Use the dealers to diagnose and independents to repair if you must.

Remember your J30 shares almost the entire drive train with a 300ZX [90-96] NA..........every big city has a Z shop specialist.

Same with a Q the Z shops at least have a Consult and the trannies are similar [Q just beefier and used in the Z twin turbo].

They may not know the engine internals but they know TPS, IAC, Crank angle, coil on plug, the MAF, coolant temp sensors, corrosion connector problems, injector problems, valve interferrence problems...........etc.
