Hey again :). When I did my oil change (first time newb on this), I didn't drain it as much as I should have and put in 4 qts synthetic oil. When I measured the oil, it was well above the gradient area.

Is it safe to drive around w/ this? I think I have 1 qt or so too many. Or should I drain and redo the oil change (I hope not, synthetic oil is expensive.

Thanks

an extra quart? that might be a bit much. Take a reading again when the oil's settled down a bit and after you've wiped off the dipstick.

I actually took the reading several times and it's about where the "notch" is on the dipstick, which is way above the gradient.

What would happen if I kept driving with too much oil.

The reason I think it's 1 qt too much is because I don't think it completely drained. And usually, so I've heard, people put in about 3 qts + a little more. I put in a full 4 qts.

It's my first oil change - I'm learning :).

Maybe if I just drain it a little really quick and plug it back up while it's draining then check?

Might be messy but yeah, you can do that. Also you can get a hand vacuum and a long hose and suck out some oil from the dipstick tube.

or pull off the filter, then let it drain out, then put the filter back in.

if you have too much oil, the only thing that may happen is that you burn some oil and the crank may sit in it, frothing it up, and as you know, oil bubbles dont lubricate as well as liquid oil

That's what you have to worry about. If you overfill the oil, the crank will froth it up and it can lead to problems. If you were like a half quart over, I would say don't worry about it, but a full quart is alot of oil and you should get rid of some of it.

ive had to let oil out of a durango ( some morons put a quart too much in) just pull the plug, let it drain for like a second, stick it back in, not all the way just enought to stop the flow, then check it again.

the easiest way i would think is just pulling out the filter and letting it empty into what ever you collect your oil in, then put it back in. the 240 takes almolst 4 quarts so your probobly fine anyway
