How does one remove & replace the right rear speaker & amplifier in a 1990 Q45?
Scattered about Nico are a bunch of threads on the 1991/1992 Q45 Bose speaker & amplifier replacement; but I didn't find a lot of detail on the R&R.
Since I'm expecting to remove & replace my right rear (whining) speaker & amplifier assembly, I may as well start a new thread specifically on the R&R.
Any advice on how to go about it would be welcome ... Meanwhile I'll do some of my own research (I sure hope the rear deck doesn't need to be removed like it did for the fuel pump & fuel pump controller R&R).
I'm confused whether the rear seat & parcel shelf needs to be removed or if only the trunk bulkheads need be removed to R&R the right rear Bose speaker & amplifier in the 1990 Q45.
1) According to the http://carstereohelp.com web pages (see details below), access is through the trunk.
2) Yet, the bulk of the Nico posts (see list included with this post) indicate access through the rear seat similar to the fuel pump R&R I've done in the distant past (from which these photos are taken).
QUESTION: Do we R&R the 1990 Q45 rear speaker & amp from the back seat or from the trunk?

As another reference, I just now picked up the related Q45 rear-speaker-defect PDF from the National Highway & Traffic Safety Administration web site.

The diagrams in the included December 4th. 1998 ITB98-056 titled "1991-1992 Q45 SPEAKER AMPLIFIER REPLACEMENT" intimate the amplifier (AMPLIFIER KIT P/N 28061-64U25) and amplifier cover should be R&R'd from the trunk.
Likewise for the March 31, 1999 update (ITB98-056a, of the same title).
But I suspect I need to R&R the entire speaker assembly (to ship to Bose, for example, for replacement).
QUESTION: Does R&R of the entire speaker assembly require removal of the rear seat back and rear parcel shelf?
I just found a removal & replacement procedure (with photos) for the 1990 Q45 rear SPEAKER (and not just the amplifier) at http://carstereohelp.com/strinfiniti.htm
Unfortunately, this third-party web page http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalInfinitiQ45rearseatR.htm (titled "'90-93+ Infiniti Q45 Rear Seat Removal for BOSE Amplifier and Speaker Removal and Installation") says we must remove the rear seat back & parcel shelf.
It seems the 4 screws holding the 6x9 inch Bose speaker assembly to the rear deck are screwed in from the top!
You can remove just the amp from the trunk by pulling the four screws on the bottom of the case. Carefully unplug the two wires that actually feed the speaker assembly - the mounting tab that holds the terminals in place on the speaker can break.
If you're going to have Bose rebuild the amp, go ahead and remove the entire assembly since that's the only way they'll do it. (this requries removing the back seat and sundeck.
The good thing is that they'll replace the 14 year old dry pasper speaker cone, so it's worth the trouble. I'd go ahead and have them rebuilt as a pair since they all seem to fail at about the same time.

Foam surround breaks down and tears or speaker compliance changes.
Some of the early amps were soldered plus of course 90 and 91 and 92 amps were different. 90 has different plugs from 91-96.

Rubber is compliant and will break down with ozone, age and use. Reconing with the correct material with a full 180° radius is important. Paper is fine for the cone material as long as it is dry and not impacted by sharp objects, kid's fingers, etc.
- http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/DIY/bose_rr.htm says "All Bose amps will eventually fail due to inability to dissipate heat ... The transistors are plastic packed and not suited to good heat dissipation and there is no factory applied thermal grease ..."
Furthermore, NSXprime states: "The small caps also ... dry out. Components are usually rated in thousands of hours of use. Those caps should function a couple of thousand hours at "normal" temperature. For every increase of 10 C the useful life of the cap is decrease by 1/2, conversely for every decrease of 10 C the useful life is 2x (+20 degrees would be 4x, +30 degrees less would be 8x, etc...). So the smaller caps going bad should be no surprise to anyone."
- http://www.simplyspeakers.com/2doityourself.htm says "The most common problem with home and automotive speakers is the gradual deterioration of the poly-foam suspension (surround). When this occurs (usually 10-15 years) you will notice a lack of bass response and distortion in the lower frequencies."
- http://www.willmanselectronics.com/infiniti.htm says "Other than the amps going bad, the other thing we fix quite well and often is static in the volume control when turning it. If that is a problem, it will be amplified by the great working amps once they've been rebuilt."
- http://www.repairfaq.org/REPAIR/F_Speaker.html says "The typical failure modes for abused ... amps are either shorted or open voice coils in the speaker ... the voice coil/spider assembly overheats and then distorts. The clearance between the voice coil and the magnet pole pieces are fairly small and a little deformation of the cylindrical voice coil will make it bind and buzz. After that happens, it heats up alot faster and either fuses open or wears through the voicecoil wire insulation and shorts to the pole piece."
- http://www.musicianshotline.com/archive/tech/reconing.htm lists "7 parts that you need to recone a loudspeaker, a Cone, Voice coil, Spider, Dust cap, Gasket, Leadwire and Shim."
- http://www.carstereohelp.com/repairDoItYourselfBoseSpeakerRepair.htm says "loose center dust cover ... that can cause distorted sound at higher volumes with bass."
Hi Squeefoo, I'm embarrassed to say ... I haven't done anything with the speakers yet. I'm sorry 'cause I can't help anyone as I haven't done anything yet.
