Took a look at a 96Q OBD2 with Consult, the neutral idle was 6 grams per second [750 rpm] and 4.8 grams in drive [stopped [foot on brake]][650 rpm].............thats 7-9 HP just to overcome internal friction and turn the accessories. The amount of air that COULD MAKE 1 HP is 1.2 grams per second

http://www.ecutek.com/tuning/induction/Above shows what can happen if you redesign the intake!

Because engineers like standardization 255 grams per second yields 4.5 volts at the MAF terminals on most 250-300HP engines

Interesting to speculate if the promised added HP from an intake mod is from actually more air flow or just from MAF falsely reading less air flow and leaning the engine out from the overly rich protective settings. Or Nothing at all happens..

"MAF sensors can get contaminated from a variety of sources -- dirt, oil, silicone, spider webs, potting compound from the sensor element itself, etc. When an MAF sensor gets contaminated, it skews the transfer function such that the MAF overestimates airflow at idle (causes the fuel system to go rich) and underestimates airflow at high airflow (causes the fuel system to go lean). This means that Long Term Fuel Trim will learn lean (negative) corrections at idle and rich (positive) corrections at higher airflow. If a vehicle is driven at WOT (Wide-Open Throttle) or high loads, the fuel system normally goes open loop with a rich mixture to provide maximum power. If the MAF is contaminated, the fuel system will actually be."

How cleaning the MAF element of air filter fuzz and dirt changed the reading 25% at 2500 rpm cruise........fixing a lean cruise NOX failure.

Brilliant stuff. Another good reason my MAF sensor gets cleaned at every oil change...

Thanks Dennis.

How to clean the MAF sensor? Do you clean by blowing it with a compress air?

When I open it up, all I see was a resitor and a piece of wire.

MAF falsely reading less air flow for sure. You caught that one.

Clean the MAF by spraying brake parts cleaner on it... Use a half can on it just keep spraying!!!
