The 2004 Titan pickup truck is Nissan’s first entry into the North American full-size truck market. It is a credible and capable half-ton pickup with a robust full-boxed section frame designed specifically for full-size pickup use. Titan features a distinctive exterior styling and a roomy, highstyle and versatile interior. It also includes leading-edge technology and capabilities, such as:

• 5.6L “Endurance” V-8 engine (VK56DE) with 305 horsepower and 379 lb.-ft. of torque• 9,500-lb (4,309 Kg) towing capacity on SE 2WD; 9,400-lb (4,264 Kg) capacity on all other models• King Cab with Wide OpenTM doors, allowing nearly 180 degrees of rear cargo area access• Crew Cab with best-in-class second row legroom• Available High Utility cargo bed, featuring an industry-first factory spray-in bedliner, Utili-TrackTM channel system and numerous functional additions

Key competitors in Titan’s class are Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Dodge Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra.

The 2004 Pathfinder Armada is Nissan’s first entry into the North American full-size SUV market. It is a credible and capable vehicle with exceptional comfort designed to express an extroverted and assertive personality. Pathfinder Armada features a robust, ladder-type body-on-frame assembly designed specifically for full-size SUV use, as well as a modern exterior and roomy, high-style interior. It also includes leading-edge technology and capabilities, such as:

• 5.6L “Endurance” V-8 engine (VK56DE) with 305 horsepower and 385 lb.-ft. of torque• 9,100-lb (4,128 Kg) towing capacity with available towing package; 6,500-lb (2,948 Kg) towing capacity without• Advanced 4x4 system with automatic “All-Mode” 4WD capability• 8-passenger capacity with best-in-class rear legroom• Independent front and rear suspension systems, designed-in from the beginning, with available rear load-leveling air suspension system

Key competitors in Pathfinder Armada’s class are Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukonand Toyota Sequoia.

General SpecificationsThe 2004 Pathfinder Armada and Titan are both equipped with the new “Endurance” 5.6L, 90-degree V8 engine. The low-maintenance, high-performance VK56DE engine has the followingfeatures:

• Aluminum block and cylinder heads• Dual overhead camshafts (DOHC), 4 valves per cylinder• Silent-type, single-stage timing chains for quiet operation and superior durability• Engine-driven accessories are driven by a single serpentine belt; an automatic tensioner maintains belt tension.• Horspower rating: 305• Torque rating: 385 lb-ft (522 Nm ) for Pathfinder Armada; 379 lb-ft (514 Nm) for Titan

The following are the only scheduled maintenance items for the VK56DE engine:

• Oil filter• Engine oil• Air filter• Spark plugs (105,000 miles/169,000 km tune-up interval)• Engine coolant is changed at 60,000 miles (96,000 Km) and every 30,000 miles (48,000 Km) thereafter

The aluminum cylinder block contains several new design features:

• Steel cylinder head gasket improves sealing performance, enhances reliability• Reinforced lower end to improve bore and stroke stability• VK56DE firing order: 1-8-7-3-6-5-4-2• Vertical flow U-turn coolant flow• A rectification rib has been added in the water jacket to improve water flow

Valvetrain

• Double Over Head Camshaft (DOHC)• Shimless type valve lifter• Low tension valve springs• Common valve train specifications with the VQ35DE engine• Aluminum cylinder heads• For light weight and compactness this DOHC, 4 valve engine uses direct opening valves• Cam cover shape has been optimized to reduce noise and vibration

Camshaft Identification

• Each camshaft is identified in the following ways:• RH camshafts have I.D. rib• INT camshafts have white I.D. paint• EXH camshafts have light blue I.D. paint

A dowel pin and a welch plug are common to QR and VQ engines.

Timing Chain

• A single, 0.25 in (6.35mm) pitch, super silent chain drives the valvetrain.• Oil jets provide additional lubrication for the silent chain and chain guide.• Chains are interchangeable.

Intake Manifold

A one piece plastic intake manifold consists of the following:• Light weight plastic manifold• Long runners with large cross section for power output increase at low-middle engine speeds• Plenum chamber• Injector pocket

The manifold is accompanied by a split throttle body.

Starter MotorThe starter has an output of 1.9 hp (1.4 kw). It is a front nose type, reduction gear starter, with 11 teeth. The starter is mounted under the intake manifold, in the engine valley. The gear teeth engage the flex plate from above instead of from below. A sub harness has been added to improve serviceability.

Ignition CoilThe VK56DE engine uses eight ignition coils (one per spark plug). The system is similar to other Nissan engine ignition systems. Other system features:• Coils mounted directly on spark plug• Less consumption of electric power• Less weight

Fuel Injector

The fuel injector design used on the VK56DE engine utilizes a 12-hole spray versus the typical pintle-type. The 12-hole injector atomizes the fuel spray quicker.

Engine Overheat Protection

The VK56DE engine in both the Pathfinder Armada and Titan have an overheat protection designed into the Engine Control Module (ECM) logic. Under severe conditions such as low coolant or heavy towing, the following could occur:• As the temperature increases above 93° C (200° F), the Transmission Control Module (TCM) upshifts the automatic transmission from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. This limits engine rpm andthrottle response.• If the engine temperature continues increasing, the ECM limits throttle response to no more than approximately 3,700 rpm.• The electric cooling fan in front of the A/C condenser turns ON.• The ECM shuts OFF the A/C compressor.• If engine temperature continues increasing, the engine temperature/oil temperature warning light turns ON, indicating the engine temperature is excessive.• In a severe condition where the engine temperature increases to an excessively high amount, the ECM could shut the engine OFF until the temperature has cooled down. This only occurs when the engine temperature becomes extremely high and engine damage could result.Note: The ECM electronically limits throttle opening if the engine coolant temperature sensor detects engine overheating or low coolant level. Once the coolant reaches the correct temperature, the engine returns to normal operation. Should the coolant temperature continue rising, the ECM shuts off the fuel until the engine cools to a safe level.
