Are stockish C5 Corvettes fast?

I don't know what all was done on this, but I thought it would have been a lot faster.

I was coming home from a big car meet in a parking garage in Odaiba (an area of Tokyo), and this Vette came up behind me and passed me at a pretty quick clip. He didn't do anything to antagonize me, but I wanted to run against it to see how they ran.

I was able to catch up to him due to him getting caught behind a truck, and when the truck moved over, off we went.

I just always thought that a C5 was a much faster car. Don't know why, but I really wouldn't have thought my heavy and stock GT-R (only an APEX'i exhaust) would have been able to keepe up with him, let alone pass him, although I think he lifted just as I was about to pass him because there was a car ahead in his lane.

Everything lasted all of about a minute and a half and then it was back to life as normal.

But, read the title and the description I posted. Very ironic!

I know. I had a momentary lapse of stupid that night.

But, I did find out at that exact point that I don't have a speed governor on my car.

No no. I mean "only" 350 hp as I call 350hp a lot. But in the modern horsepower wars, 350 hp isn't a lot to brag about.

yeah...I think they'd knock down the 1/4 in a low low 13 seconds to a very high 12.

I think it really depends on what tires are on it. Traction is a problem sometimes with that high a HP number and the torque it makes.

What sucks is that C5 Corvettes still run anywhere from $30-$60k. My car was $15k.

Also, a good majority of Japanese people think that American cars have better build quality than the Japanese, and that their domestic cars are crap.

Go figure.

Car manufactures have different standards for their domestic buyers. From what I remember hearing, Toyotas/Hondas/Nissans in Japan are built with lower standards then those in the US. Mean while US cars have the same US standards no matter where there car ends up. I think this might contribute to their thinking.

For most people, a C5 is fast. To you and me, 350hp is a good start. I actually just bought an '02 this past Friday. Super nice car and I got a KILLER deal on it. Far from being the quickest car I've ever driven, BUT it won't take much to get an LS1 to run hard.

Yes, here in Japan, Corvettes are expensive.

There is an early C6 sitting at a lot near one of my part time jobs. It's still about $65k.

Hell, at my old apartment, there was a guy who lived next door to our building who had a 1999 Tahoe, the one a bit smaller than a Suburban but bigger than a 4 door S10 Blazer. He bought it in 2006 and paid over $25k for it. My mom's 1999 Suburban, bought in 2001 was just a hair over $20k.

Even Chevy Astros and Safaris will sell for more than $15k over here. It's rediculous what people will pay for cars that we wouldn't spend more than a few grand on.

Repo, are you bringing the Vette to the BBQ? If so, I would like to drive it. I've driven an early C4 and a C2 vert and only ridden an Indy Pace version of a C5. I'd like to drive it and see how it compares to the R.

Whenever we get some decent weather and I get a chance to clean it up and take pics. I just took delivery Friday and it's rained since then.
