I have a 99Q with 145K miles, when I am accelerating, there is a noticeable 'whining' noise from the transmission area that changes pitch with the RPMs, but then goes away after you are up to speed, and its also noticeable if I am at speed and give it enough throttle to downshift...I have a recording of it I can post if my description of the sound is inadequate

any ideas? the transmission fluid looks perfect...if I'm in neutral and rev it there is no whine...

When was the last transmission flush or drain and refill and filter replacement performed?

I think it's more likely something in the transmission, but It could also be the differential if it's failing. I saw a post with this exact description on one of the Frontier boards from a member who had let his differential run dry.

I have a 2000 Q45 with 113,000 miles and also have a whine / drone which I suspect is transmission related. I will try to describe it more so that you can comment on whether it is the same and it would be great if you can post the recording of yours.

When I accelerate from rest it is there and is not a high pitched whine but more of a general noise like you might get in a lower priced car from the transmission. I know it is not normal as my son has a 98 Q45 and has no such noise. The other time I hear what I assume is the same or related to the noise described above is when I am on the highway and I apply the throttle. In this situation is it more of a drone. This goes away as soon as I remove my foot from the gas. I also cannot reproduce the noise when the car is in neutral.

Does it sound as if we have the same noise?

My car has had the transmission fluid changed once at around 45,000 miles and again at 85000 miles both times at a Mobile 1 franchise using their transmission flush machine. The pan has not been dropped and it just has the standard transmission cooler.

So you don't know how the transmission is fairing as you can't inspect the screen and you are relying on the coke can heat exchanger in the radiator.

Every poster needs to comment on the white papaer towel test instead of "looks good" or saying nothing at all.

This sounds exactly like the behavior I am observing, here is a link to the audio file (of course you need to turn it up to hear it):

My trans fluid passes the paper towel test, the level looks good, but I will check it again.

Also i've noticed if I accelerate full throttle I don't hear it, it only under moderate acceleration

Yes that sounds like the sound mine makes, although mine is not as pronounced. Hopefully some of our experienced members will offer up a diagnosis / solution. For a long while I thought the noise might be a slight leak in the exhaust system but your noise sounds like a transmission sound and mine is probably just at an early stage of wear.

so I took my car by a transmission shop on Thursday and the guy drove it a few minutes to observe the behavior, I am going to take it in this week and leave it so they can take the pan off and check it out...stay tuned...

Mine does it too - Seems like it's a little bit louder when the AC compressor is running, but only a tad. Putting some weight on the trans shifter knob also seems to make it louder.

If I was to hazard a WAG, I'd suspect the motor and transmission mounts - Old, hard rubber transmits more noise to the passenger compartment, particularly when acceleration tries to twist the drivetrain.

Hey that is a good idea, I will have them check the mounts...

Well I took my car into the transmission shop this morning, they just called a minute ago to tell me the car was fixed and ready to pick up, it had the WRONG FILTER installed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will report back when I have been able to drive it and test it out...

The internal filter screen is indeed a different part number for the RE04 in the FGY33 than the RE04 in the G50.

Hope they replced the O ring, gasket, and one time use bolts also.

Well its working awesome now, paid $160 for the service, including new fluid, filter, gasket etc. If anyone is in the Raleigh/Durham area I would recommend Jakes Transmission on Hillsborough Rd in Durham, they definitely know their stuff...
