Has anyone had an experience with the y33 vh41?

There seems to have been a change in the manifold design, I was initially only interested in the spider design as I was lead to believe that it was the most efficient of the 2 buuuuuuuuuuuuuut.....

http://autospeed.com/cms/title....html has some info that contradicts that. The y33 seems to have a log style manifold and achieve peak power 400rpm lower aswell as increasing torque by 6nm and achieving it 400rpm lower as well.

Having said all that I dont want to buy one if they have changed the design of the chain guides and all the rest like what happened on the VH45.

**By the way I am limited to the vh41 due to local restrictions so please dont post about the vh45!

ONLY the VH45DE has the "spider" plenum design. 1990-1993 VH45DE's need the plastic chain guides replaced. The manifolds were all the same on the VH45DE and the VH41DE.

That is mettlers car with a jdm vh41de with the spider design manifold on it and printed clearly on the top of the manifold is 4100 :P

Manifold all the same? Exhaust manifolds?

And the Jap VH41 had the 'spider' plenum. The US VH41 did not.

Correct! I've nearly finished building the car in its second incarnation, hopefully finished this week sometime!

The Y33 version of the VH41DE has been built less the main bearing beam which is supposed to be there to reduce a bunch of vibration. I wouldn't bother with the Y33 gen motor, get the Y32 series 2 engine (yep, they updated the Y32 gen).

Also, I just saw a superstock VH41DE put down 460HP at the wheels on one manifold, 422HP with another, 8200rpm limiter, 10:1 compression ratio. If that's not impressive, I dunno what is.

You can tell the difference between 1st & 2nd gen Y32 VH41DEs initially by the plaque on the plenum.

The 1st gen (I assume this is the 1st gen anyway, from all the motors I've seen these always appear more 'aged') has a thick plastic plaque with silver writing on it, like mine in the pic linked above.

The 2nd gen has a thinner metal plaque, the embossed writing on it is more gold in colour, like this one:

We're presently working on a transplant of the 2nd gen motor into a VL, and while making exhaust manifolds we noticed the oil filter housing is slightly different, it has a small extra boss on the casting with a thread tapped into it... probably just a mounting support point for some peripheral.

There may be some other variations, but I think largely the changes are to do with packaging because the Y32 era VH41DE was released in a couple of different chassis.

this man speaks the truth.

I have a "1st gen" Y32 Cima engine; number ~11k, and a '2nd gen' Leopard engine; number ~33k.

Apart from the manifolds I haven't noticed too much difference. I guess when I get them side by side on engine stands I can let you know more.

Haha

We already concluded that the VH into VL is a bad idea for a swap, the engine bay is too narrow and very cramped. No chance of having extractors, it's gotta be log style so you'd pretty much wanna go TT.

Nevertheless, it's my mate's project car and the engine is already mounted up with a 6 spd tremec box + custom bellhousing behind it, so he's gonna persevere and get it done.

Never mind the gens at the moment, GOD these are hard to find in AUS at the moment! Tried a list of 42 importers that I had and only 2 of them had a cut but both wanted MASSIVE prices for them!

Anyone in AUS able to help? Currently in talks with a guy in WA but the freight is killer

What sort of $$ are they asking? Surely you could find one on Yahoo Japan and get a import guy to bring it in. Had a few of the z32 guys do it, find killer engines on Yahoo and bring them over.

Before you read this, I am on a budget and I am just a tight arse in general :P Who doesn't want to save money!?!?

Anyways, the guy in WA is able to get me a cut for 1500 from japan and to him. The postage is what kills the deal on that one. Then the guys in the east want from 2600 to 3200 without a box and from what I can understand most of the parts will be stripped out as well.

I have emailed a guy in JP that lives there and helps import things but he is snowed under so while he works on getting me one Im still trying to push for one over here.

Ok so I now have a y32 gen 2 vh41 in my garage, finally!

Now im about to tackle the loom, this is the first one I will have done on my own. I have done an rb30 into a silvia and spliced in a rb26 setup but that was a bloody cake walk in comparison to the size of the loom on the 41!

I was wondering if anyone had any wiring info or resources that they could share? I want to have the engine totally on its own to the rest of the car.
