It amazes me how few people use the PARKING brake when PARKING an automatic.
Ever notice how when you put a car into "P," you can feel the car roll back and forth a little bit?
I'm sure Q45Tech or another more transmission knowledgeable mechanic can explain the intricacies of WHY, but I can at least explain simple procedure for the correct way to park any automatic transmission vehicle on a hill.
Brake to a stop. With foot firmly still on brake, fully apply parking brake.NOW shift to Park - notice, the car doesn't move anymore?
I've found when you park in an auto car on a hill, if you don't apply the brake, all kinds of godawful pops and knocks come when you put it into gear.
Using the above method, my car ALWAYS seamlessley shifts from P to D, even on steep hills.
Sorry for the long answer - won't help your "winding down" problem, but I had to get this out there because too many people never use their brake!!!
However, at 179k, my transmission is still very healthy, red fluid test at ever 15k check, and although it's starting to feel a bit tired, I anticipate at least 200k out of it.
