subforums are dead, ugh!!!

A General Discussion forum for cars and other topics, and a great place to introduce yourself if you are new to NICO!

Alright moderators and admins. I need your help on what to do.

I made a thread in general chat last night about a 200sx with a charging issue.

Within a couple minutes I got a response.

Shortly after that it it got moved to the Sentra subforum.

It has been over 12 hours with no responses.

I understand that we want to divide the information per vehicle, but at what cost?

A question that could be answered by almost anyone is now going unanswered.

Maybe this is a flaw in the setup of the forum? For separation and organization of information we are willing to eliminate traffic flow?

This is the thread I posted. zerothread?id=461622

If possible could you please move it back in to general chat.

Thank you

Vast amounts of subforums are the bane of forums. It seems like a good idea, but there just isn't the traffic.

If everyone followed the rules and posted everything in their appropriate subforum, they'd get more traffic. But when we have everyone, including mods, posting stuff in gen chat that should go in a subforum, then there's no reason to venture outside of gen chat.

So you want everything crammed into one forum? That for sure wouldn't work out...

I understand your plight, PMQ, but Looney's right: the more posting outside the right forums that happens, the more it is likely to continue, and the greater the issue becomes. So I don't want to move the thread to general...I don't want people thinking they can get away with it. Sorry, man.

I will post in your thread some thoughts, though. Alternator issues are EVIL.

What if someone were to lock the general chat forcing people to go to the sub forums?

Sure traffic will either die significantly on NICO or the sub forums will become more alive.

if they seriously locked gen chat....the traffic would drop off tremendously and it wouldn't really increase the subforums topic much cause then you would have to be talking about certain subjects relating to whatever subforum your in.

well that and 240 gen would be locked because that's where i would have to spend most of my time making fun of people.

I'd Be Confined To 240 Gen Chat, Which Would Most Likely Get Me Banned.

We used to have a good amount, then they started making forums for f***ing everything... At that point people started the "There is a forum for ____ why isn't there one for ______"

I'd say post it in Nissan Mechanic. Its at least a little more general and more likely to bring in a crowd.

Not really though, because most of those posts are only when they have an issue. At that point they only go into the one subforum related to that issue, post there thread then leave.

You want few enough subforums that people can drop by each one that is relevant to them. Then you get actual traffic coming though rather then just a person who's only goal is to add to the un-answered questions.

Maybe people who have been around a while figured you didn't really need any help, since you already know everythng.

I have a crap ton of the Yahoo board posts and Q45techs posts so I am all set for the most part.

Anyone who is interested let me know.

PMQ - I saw your thread had been moved to Sentra Gen and decided to leave it for a bit before offering to move it to Nissan Online Mechanic. You're issue is undoubtedly weird, so the lack of a prompt response isn't surprising. NOM's visitor population is more likely to have someone with the right knowledge pop in. I'm more than happy to do that for you if you'd like.

Actually you would be amazed how well it does work...If you want, check out the NCIX forum. The main forum will should ALL posts no matter the topic, although if you only want to see a specific section of questions or posts then you click on the left side what category you want to view. It works great...

"If you build it, they will come" isn't always valid.

General Chat is Wal-Mart.

Sentra subforum is K-Mart.

240 General is looting during the LA riots.

I disagree completely. Yes if every one posted thing in their right places more people would scatter their attention to many subforums but for the most part when I need a question anwserd about my Altima it is because I don't know much about it. So Yea I would be in the Altima section more then usual until my question is answered BUT I will never respond to any ones posts in that section.

The current system is flawed.

If there were a system that allowed a random unanswered thread to show above the stickys in Gen chat then I would go out of my way to read and answer. But I will not go into Car Buying Advise Tech Forum to see what's "new".

Slap a randomly generated unanswered thread on the top of every forum wall and boom.

We got this: zer...wered.

But the cluster f*** of topics in one section with links in a sidebar to show what section they belong to seems like a good idea on paper (internet).

"the search menu and look up the unanswered topics"

I know we have that. But I won't do it, if it were in my face and only one topic instead of 70, the odds are I would lend a hand.

You say it works on paper, but it also works...and has for years in the forum i spoke about...

i've gone there before, opened up a bunch of threads that i knew i could provide some type of helpful responses and posted. every once in a while i'll look in there and see if there's any help that i can provide someone, but more often than not, the tech questions are covering things that i have little to no useful knowledge about.
