The car in question is a 2000 VW Beetle. It is in the parking lot of where i work. The "owners" left it here in the lot and gave me the keys in august and said they would be back next week as they were going out of state or country (didn't specify.) We being nice and all said that's fine.

2 weeks went by and they never showed up, we tried contacting them at the numbers they had left us. Called the cops to see what we could do about the car and if they could contact the owners on our behalf but they were no help at all!

Looked up the address that we have and the house was for sale and is now sold to my knowledge. The sticker on the plate expired 08/08...they had a temporary permit issued for seven days for the time they were here. I have also checked the vin and the title is clear with no lienholders.

The reason i know all this is because i have the key and access to the car...the car now has two flat tires and doesn't turn over and is taking up space in our parking lot...i'm tempted to just call a tow truck and have them take it away but then again i'm really trying to obtain it for myself so i can sell it for some profit.

I've done a little research on the subject but with the circumstances of it being on private property and me having the keys and no way of getting a hold of the owners, it's kind of hard to make sense of it.

Does anyone here have any experience in cases like this? greg?

first and foremost I would talk to the local police department, talk to your local DMV as well I'm sure there is some sort of law saying if it is left unattended for some time then it is legally yours or something.... the police also may be able get a hold of the owner themselves.

Every state works a little bit different, but the jist of it(at least when I did it here in SC) is that the owner of the property that the car is on can apply for a title on an ababdoned car once the car has been there for 6 months.

But every state is going to be different, ask around at body shops and wrecker services (or any where cars are likly to get abandoned) and see what the owers of thoes places have done about it. I'm sure that atleast one of them has had a car left at their place that they felt was worth the trouble of getting a title on so they could make some money off of it.

no, no, no. what color is it? if it's an inconspicuous color, we use it as a getaway car for a few bank heists. no one would ever suspect a bug. and once we ditch it, all the paperwork will be traced back to these missing persons.

The thing with this car is if the owners ever come back they are not getting the keys because the car has been on our property since the second week of august so in essence we have been storing the vehicle.

I haven't checked how much it costs to keep a vehicle in storage for 2 months or even how much it would've costed him to get his vehicle out of an impound lot had i called a tow truck...so either he pays up for storage fees if he returns or i believe i can place a lien title on it.

I would start at DMV and try and keep the police out of it.

Just talking out my a** here, but I would be more afraid of the police actually doing something about it (i.e. ticketing it and marking it for tow or something).

I would imagine the DMV would have the info, and wouldn't give a s*** about ticketing or reporting the car.

I highly doubt that the cops could give it a ticket or a tow. Its parked on private property.

I have a friend that has a shop and after having a few ppl leave cars there for ever, he now has a storage fee for any car left over 30 days. Once the fee's for storage get up over what the car is worth, he puts a lein on it and files to take ownership of the vehicle. Once he's got ownership of the car, he sells it.

This is a legitimate, legal course of action. He only does this when he's made ever attempt to contact the owner to no avail.

The laws are different for every state, but I would start with the DMV.

My 240 was towed a few months ago on my "private property" for expired plates.

Just goto your local DMV and ask for the paper work for a storage lien. You fill out why its their and your storage fees. Wait a few weeks and youll get the title in your name. Just did it to my x roommate that left his Jeep behind.

Lots of wrong answers.

Go get an Abandoned Vehicle Application for Title (in AZ, it's a request for authorization to move abandoned vehicle).

Do NOT say it was a "gift". It wasn't.

Fill out the papers to the best of your knowledge ACCURATELY and submit them. The DMV will attempt to locate the owner. After a certain period of time passes, you can apply for a title.

If the owner DOES say he wants it back, you're entitled to storage fees (I think they're like $30/day in AZ). This will usually change their mind. If they don't pay, you keep the car.
