The NSLU2s are great little boxes... before SlugOS rolled onto the scene, we used DSL (Damn Small Linux) and certain USB ethernet adapters, since @ that point we couldn't get the built-in ethernet working. However, we were installing onto the system's built-in memory.
Also, while the CPU currently runs @ 133Mhz, it's a cinch to bring back to its factory default speed of 266Mhz. At 266, it doesn't draw any more power or create any additional heat.
I've had a handful of these guys running DSL for a few years now, acting as external DNS servers... It's easy to configure the internal file systems to read only, creating quite the secure, power and space efficient DNS boxen!
