Did you receive a "key number plate" from the dealership with your purchase?

The 2009 Nissan Rogue Owner's Manual states a "key number plate" is supplied with the keys (including vehicles equipped with the intelligent key). See pg. 3-2. The manual advises that the key number should be recorded and kept in a safe place. In the event the keys to the vehicle are lost, a Nissan dealer will be able to duplicate the key using the key number. The manual states that Nissan does not record any key numbers so it is very important to keep track of this number.

A key number is only necessary when you have lost all keys and do not have one to duplicate from. If you still have a key, this key can be duplicated by a Nissan dealer.

A key number plate comes with every Nissan. The key number has been around for years... my '87 Pathfinder and '90 240SX had the number on a sticker inside the glove box. My '03 Altima and the '08 Rogue have the key number plates.

You should have received one. If not, I would ask the dealer. When the time comes to replace keys, they simply input the number into their key cutting machine and cut a perfect original of the key.

Note: Replacement keys require programming so the anti-theft ID chip is recognized by the vehicle, otherwise the engine will not start.

I would not be surprised if the dealer keeps it as a revenue tool. If you need new keys, you HAVE to go to the dealer who sold you the car to get the code and order the keys. Ed

Are you sure you didn't get it? It's a VERY tiny metal tag that was probably on a key ring with one of your ikeys.

Elton, good thing we are all good natured Nissan enthusiasts... Otherwise someone would find a way to duplicate your key using the number and try to break into your car.

I would edit your photo and blur the numbers.

Hi Philipa... Thanks for looking out for me... but... that's not my keytag number

Not that I didn't trust anyone in this forum... but I took my number and using Photoshop, moved around the numbers, added some, removed some etc. Its not even close! While the number I ended up creating may belong to someone... its not me. Any crook who uses this number would have to tour the world trying it on every Nissan car out their hoping to find one it fits. Then again... since I made the number up... it may not be valid for any Nissan.

But... in an effor to save a crook any unnecessary pain... I'll blur the fake number.

Thanks to everyone for their responses! And thanks especially to Elton for the pic. Now that I know what I'm looking for, I know I definitely did not receive the key number plate from the dealership. I checked both of the keys they gave me and know I couldn't have misplaced it already because I just picked it up last week. I contacted the car salesman that I dealt with but haven't heard back from him. Ughh!! Has anyone else dealt with this situation?

P.S. Everyone should remember to place their key number in a safe place in case they lose both of their keys!

Have you checked the glove box thoroughly along with the owner's manual case? The dealer placed the one for my Frontier in the OM case.

Hey crayb - Thanks for the tip but I thoroughly checked the owner's manual, glove box and everywhere else I could think of - and no key number plate. Still haven't heard back from the dealership. I'm going to give them another call.

My dealer taped mine to the back of the key tag they put on the key ring that they write the make/model/stock number on.
