So this past weekend I went up to my girlfriends place in Edinboro. I'm moving back in a couple weeks for school...so this may become more frequent but I tried another beer and thought I'd share.

This time you get a two for one. I bought Young's Double Chocolate Stout.

I saw this reviewed and thought it sounded good.

This one was VERY dark, which stouts tend to be of course. It didn't have a whole lot going on in the smell department though.

But taste however...

It was chocolate up one side and down the other. A dark chocolate taste, and it ended pretty malty. Not too very hoppy at all.

I liked it although I probably wouldn't buy it for everyday drinking.

And I did find Dead Guy Ale from Rogue!!! They were out last time apparently (for those of you who read my earlier thread) but they had some so I had to try it.

I was too lazy to clean the other glass as you can see haha!!

This was also quite good. Dark amber in color, and it smelled wonderful.

The taste was great!! There was a decent amount of hops, but it wasn't over powering. It also went down pretty smooth but had a bit of bitterness at the end.

Overall though I'm glad I got it.

I'm definitely going to try all of the other Rogue beers!!

I've tried that Double Chocolate Stout before and damn was it amazing. Almost like you're drinking chocolate milk not beer.

If ur ever on the Oregon Coast...be sure to stop buy the Rogue Brewery in Newport....You have to walk though tons of fermentors to reach the restaurant they have. Nothing like Dead Guy XX straight from the Tap.

I bought a fifth of the Dead Guy whiskey about a month ago for 42 dollars. I got really f***ed up and puked. There were aromatic notes of the ale from which it was distilled, although it could have been aged longer. It tasted very young.

Dead Guy Ale also comes in a 64oz jug that I see sometimes at my favorite stores in the Grand Rapids area.

Yeah a bit.

But it softens the blow when you only buy one pint at a time haha

I would LOVE to. I actually think next summer I may make a trip to Cali' with my girlfriend to visit her uncle. I may just plan a couple days to travel up there too since I'll already be on that side of the US and all LOL

Hmmm...that's a terrible price for a bottle of whiskey. (I mean in terms of higher quality whiskey compared to like Black Velvet or something else)

A 64oz jug would be cool as hell!!

Ehhh, its like $10 for a 6 pack. Maybe expensive compared to bud light but it also stronger too... It actually tastes good and a 1 bottle goes farther...

Get the Young's stout in the nitro can. It's utter crap from the bottle.

Amusingly for the expensive stuff comment, those are two of my more budget choices.

Really? Why's that? Normally bottled beer is superior to canned beer.

I want to show you this, its my bottle of Dogfish Head's 120 minute IPA. Brewed at %22.5 ABV, thats a 45 proof beer! I've had it a few times before, and its like 5 Sierra Nevada's stacked into one bottle, its not syrupy or thick, but its a big, heavy beer thats just insane. $11 per 12oz bottle. They say it ages well, and I'm saving this one until 2018, mmmmmm.[IMG][/IMG]

Guiness is a special case due to the can widget, which is absent from bottles. Glass is a superior oxygen barrier to aluminum, which means it protects flavor better. Unless the products going into the bottles and cans are different, or there's some other factor involved (like the widget) glass bottled drinks of ANY kind (but especially beer which loses flavor quality rapidly with oxidation) will taste better than those in cans and especially (yuck) plastic bottles.Of course, beer throws another curveball in there by being vulnerable to light, for which cans are superior protection. But most bottled beer comes in tall boxes now, which helps a lot, as do darkly colored bottles.

The "rocket" thing in bottles is nothing more than a spinnie-dealie that's supposed to (for lack of a better term) create turbulence in the beer as you pour it and enhance head quality. Nowhere near as effective as the widget found in the cans, which releases nitrogen-impregnated compressed beer into the drink, creating nearly draught-like head. The widget and the nitrogen compression process help create more head with a more uniform consistency. The rocket dealie just "stirs" things.

I had a great night of beer with a friend and it involved a few 90min Dogfish IPAs, A few Sapporo silver cans, and a Hefe.

We both don't remember much, but the dogfish IPA was thick and alcoholic.Very nice.

Ahhh, I am not a fan of stouts and Guiness is no different. I just know from roomates that there is SOMETHING in there... always wondered what it was.

Usually when i drink I shoot straight to liquor.and I'm not a fan of your grocery store beers. Bud, Busch, Heineken etc. AT ALL, just doesn't go down well and I can't stand the taste.

But someone i work with has been urging me to expand my beer tastes and encouraged me to try Rogue. So i swing by the local beverage store today and pic up a 6 pack of Dead Guy.

I'm actually still drinking it right now, and it probably should have been chilled, I'm overeager and drinking it at room temp. And i agree completely with PBfreak's review. Good flavor, not overpowering and just a bit of bitterness at the end. i was a bit leery because of my general dislike for beer, but I know i'm going to enjoy the rest of this.

I gotta get my hands on one of those.

The chocolate beer, on the other hand, sounds kinda ghey ... Dead guy ale sounds interesting though.

Ive had these beers.

Dead guy ale was ok, I was expecting it to be a heavier beer than what it was, so i was actually a little disappointed. It is called dead guy beer afterall.

The double chocolate stout does taste good, but its not what i look for in a beer, especially in the summer time. I dont really like beer that doesnt taste like beer, if I want chocolate milk I'll help myself to a yoohoo.

That 120 min dogfish head IPA is ridiculous, I went on an IPA rampage a couple weeks ago, and that was one that I tried. Seriously the most flavor Ive ever had in a beer, it was overpowering for sure, no way I would want to drink more than one, (or could even afford to for that matter) Kroger sells them locally at $8.50 per 12 oz bottle. I would highly recommend the 90 minute IPA though, its definitely a better balanced beer for a normal beer drinker.

My thoughts exactly. Reminds me too much of the cola beer they sell in Germany. Mixxery's I belive they're called. I dunno, my gf drank them whenever we'd go out, while I stuck to Guinness.

Yeah, dead guy isn't TOO hard core... and its only like 6.6% IIRC. But its good to drink and what more could you ask for from a drink

I am going to say go out an buy Brother Thelonious. Not that it is related at all.... Its an abby style ale,but its good and not too expensive.

To quote the guy at Beverages and More who I asked to help me find it "That's like one of the best beers ever!", lol

Plus part of the sale goes to charity so you can drink for the greater good.

Hmm...never heard of it but I'll definitely give it a go!!

Its actually not a girlie drink at all. In fact you HAVE to like dark beer for sure to even enjoy this. This beer isn't like a girl beer, its more like a beer drinker's desert.

If you are expecting chocolate milk when you drink it you'll be disappointed. Its just the chocolate milk of beers. Its still VERY malty and pretty strong, its just that when you drink it your get some strong chocolate notes.

Just don't judge it till you try it.

Thanks!! Glad you tried it!!

I'm a very big believer that there is a big difference between "beer" (bud, coors, miller, and the like) and "good beer".

When people say they like beer, rarely have they actually tried a true BEER. What they call beer is a watered down bland carbonated beverage that has been ruin so almost anyone can drink it.

These beer companies do it to market to the widest audience possible to make the most money. This usually translates to a reasonably priced can of piss.

The true beers, the good beers, are beers made not to cater to as many as possible, but beers made to taste a certain way. Whether it is an IPA, a Stout, or a Lager, its a beer that probably won't be a hit with the general public, but is targeted towards a specific type of beer drinker who likes that specific flavor.

I'm not sure if any of this makes sense cause I'm sort of ranting...but essentially I just think everyone should just go out and try as many beers as possible and stop being safe and just drinking miller lite!!

I will try this brother thelonious you speak of. I swear I've seen that label in some store before.

Trying new beers has seriously become one of my biggest hobbies, I couldnt even list all the different beers I've had in the past year.

I think when it starts to cool off outside, Im going to experiment deeper into stouts and porters. I've only scratched the surface of these types of beers, while I have had alot of what I think are considered some of the best Hefeweizens and IPA's.

One of my favorite wheat beers is Hoggarrden(sp?). SO good. Maybe I'll do a review for funzies some time.

Brother Thelonius is American too! woot, some proof of the US doing it right... even though its just our version of ripping off Belgium abby ales.

Tonight I am drinking... wait for it...Newcastle! Fancy s*** right? Its my version of Budweiser, not fancy or impressive but incredibly drinkable and affordable. Well, at least around here... when ever I go home liquor stores try and rape me for the stuff. Here I get it for $12-13 bucks a 12 pack, at home they want damn near $20
