Hello guys...this is my first new post here...great forum. This link was posted in the truck section over at that dead forum and I think it's great for a bunch of gearheads to gather and talk about one single engine like this.

I've got a question...does the KA24E have a knock sensor (in a '95 model truck)? My Haynes manual mentions repeatedly the knock sensor on the VG30E engines, but never for the KA24E engine. Is it non-existent?

An interesting tale...I've owned the truck for about a year and this summer, it started knocking real bad in warm weather, especially with the A/C on. I threw some 92 oct. fuel in there until I could figure out the problem. Come to discover the timing was advanced almost 10* over stock (it was at 18* BTDC). I set it back to stock specs (10* BTDC according to the decal under the hood) and it runs like a champ now. Feels like I "lost" about 5-7 horsepower with that deal. Oh well...87 oct. is cheaper!

ka24e's lacked knock sensor in all applications afaik. Good thing you didnt blow or melt a piston at that timing spec. If you liked the power you should look into getting some water injection for that hauler.

Thanks for the reply. It was a noticeable loss, but certainly livable. Heck, it's just back to stock, as opposed to "down on power". I only heard detonation at moderate throttle with A/C on during the warmer weather, but I'm pretty anal about the vehicles and anything out of sorts isn't good with me. Everything on the engine appears to be in great condition still. No knocks or noises aside from what appears to be considered normal with the valvetrain.

Did the KA24DEs have a knock sensor, and if so, where is it installed? I have a schematic for a knock indicator (simple, using parts from Radio Shack) that I'd like to hook up to a knock sensor and connect to an LED in the cabin (LED lights when knock is detected). If the DE engines have knock sensors, that gives me a place to start, to purchase a KS for a DE engine. I'd then need to find out where that sensor is installed, and if that boss/hole is on the SOHC version.

Thanks again,
