  Learning a second language?

I'm looking for input from people that have. What method did you take? I'd like to learn Spanish, and working around them isn't enough for me to pick up on it. I'm thinking about trying Rosetta Stone.

I'm in the same boat as you. I cannot find any decent free online resources. I simply want to learn more verb usage (saying everything in the present tense makes me look stupid), as well as some vocabulary outside the restaurant environment.

It also doesn't help that the people I am learning Spanish from don't speak it properly.

Just so you know, you can take out Rosetta Stone from your library if they carry it. I'm on a waiting list for it right now.

English is my second language, and I learned by watching tons of American television. When I got to this country all I did was watch "Friends" and "Seinfeld". Try watching Telemundo and Univision or whatever else Spanish networks you get.

I took a Japanese course in high school. Obviously the easiest and cheapest route. Though that is probably not an option for you. Learn torrents and get Pimsler. Or buy it.

You have no idea how powerful a tool like Deminoid is...

It took me about a month and a half to figure it out.
I was DLing movies but then I expanded my searches to what ever my heart desiered and BOOM... Right there, ready to DL.

They have the full version of Sims 3 with the ENTIRE Sims store built in. Also the guide for Sims 3...

- You can type in events and get tons of pictures...
- Music can be DLed by Discographys, CDs, or individual songs.
- TV programs that you would never even think of searching.

I DLed every Dragon Ball episode EVER (DB, DB Z, DB GT, every movie, and DB Kai), as well as every episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy

Yeah torrents are crazy.
I used to use them just for Bleach episodes.

But then i expanded to movies.....then to PC games, then to whole PC programs.
3D studio, Photoshop, premiere etc. etc.

And now im dancing around with full BluRays and whole series. Dr Who, Top Gear, Friends, the office etc etc.

Rosetta Stone should be up, i know the Japanese version is up for sure, im DL'ing right now

No point paying for stuff that wont make your car go faster or handle better.

How hard are you trying?

I think other then moving to a spanish speaking country this is the best way. Immersion is key.

I am by no means fluent, but I used to work at a restaurant where my job was basically to keep the cooks on time, and check the quality of food they tried to send out. I was pretty lazy about learning Spanish and really didn't try hard but still picked up a ton, pretty much just from the fact that they spoke no English and I worked with them for hours ever week. (make friends with the ones who do speak english, they are handy for explaining things and translating some of the more random stuff.)

One of my buddies worked the same job and was more into learning Spanish. He learned a pretty good amount just doing the same thing, and by asking them how to say things and having them write it down. He then basically studied all these little scraps of paper with phrases on them, and would use the it in conversation next time. It helped that they were all really into the idea of us learning Spanish, so they were very ready to do their best to teach or explain the language.

Do you talk with the guys you work with in spanish? Talk with them in spanish as much as possible, when they laugh at your mistakes laugh with them and have them correct you.
And watch spanish TV when you can, if for no other reason then the tits.

The new pirate bay is going to be commercial.
So only licensed files will be available on there. They are planning on paying for any copyrighted content available.

Which means you can forget getting any DVDrips or BDrips before the DVD/BRs hit the states.
And all those steam cracked games we love, all off.

Its practically turning into Itunes but with movies and other random commercial stuff.

Rosetta Stone is the s***. My school offers it to the students and we can sign in anytime from our own computers or any computer. It's pretty cool and works...definately worth the money. Its kind of repetitive but thats good when trying to get something stuck in your head

I'm not trying hard. I recently started as a supervisor with a new and growing company. I'm still learning the ropes. There are quite a few cool and helpful Mexican associates. If the language barrier wasn't there I would really be able to help them out. I would say more than 50% of our associates are hispanic and about 10% of them understand English. That being said, Mexicans are damn hard workers. Puerto Ricans on the other hand...

They seriously are, the cooks were crazy and could pump out food like none other. I would basically just be managing the tickets that listed the items that were ordered, they had to do the same thing AND make the food. Sometimes even I would get backed up just trying to organize and read the orders, and somehow they could usually keep up with me. (granted more of them then there was me, but still...)

In all honesty the fact that there is a language barrier will make you learn much faster if you seriously want to. Thats what MADE me learn, because if you asked them in english (even if they understood) they would play dumb when I was telling them what to do.

There is bound to be one or two at least that speak basic english? Talk to them, and tell them that you are trying to learn a little. Ask them to teach you basic phrases that would be helpful.

Did you at least have high school Spanish? The phrase "Como se dice" (koh-moh seh dee-ceh - how do you say) is your friend, say it and point at s***.

Another one that helps is (dunno how to spell it) Da me (Da, like datsun, me like meah) which mean give me.

Just use Spanish where ever you can and ask questions, and don't be modest... you will sound dumb, you'll say things wrong, and you will learn.

yeah, like I said I don't do TOO bad, but I am no where near even pretending to be fluent.

At the restaurant however I could say almost everything that would come up in getting food from them, point out hot chicks, call people whores, and talk plenty of s***.

It was just weird when I saw them outside of work because we usually joked around, but when it came time to have a conversation.... well I could only ask them how the spinach was

like everyone else said, do try to watch spanish tv, movies, music, you can always google the lyrics of th songs you may like... i used index cards and placed around my house when i was trying to learn english, this way i would know whatever that was that i was looking for...

do get rid of the subtitles! worse thing you can ever have on... whenever trying to learn a new language never use them, you'll lose your concentration on how things are pronounced by how they're spelled... true story!
