I swear, when it rains, it pours. Got a '91 hatch a few months ago, was in near perfect shape. It has started smoking this past month and now for about the past week the drivers side power window has been acting up. Now it gets to where it won't even roll up and down. If you take the door panel off and tap on the little black box, it will work long enough to roll up, but as soon as you let off the button, it stops again. I took some pics in case you didn't know what I was talking about. I also broke the plastic piece that has the little pocket and holds the window switches. Mind you, I had to sit out in the driveway, in the dark, while holding the flashlight to take it off. Pics:

Box I was talking about:

I was trying to get what it said on it, but you can't read it:

This is what it looks like mounted on the door:

And, picture of the fail trying to take whatever this thing is called off:

If anyone knows what that box is called and where I can get a new one w/o having to go to the dealer, b/c I know that it will prolly be a lot. And possibly a new thing that broke, and a black door panel. The little box clicks when you hit the button but you have to hit it before the window will go up and down. I wasn't paying attention when I was pushing on the door and hit moms car and put a little paint scuff on it, but I've got a clay bar so hopefully it will come out. It never fails that when something on my cars will tear up, it does it at the MOST inconvenient time. But when is something tearing up supposed to be convenient. Thanks guys!

IT is your window amp. If it goes bad your windows will not move. The junkyard has them inside of their 240sx's.

You don't even have to buy a new one man, take it apart and resolder the main power pin. You will see which one needs work because it'll be all burnt up.

There's a writeup on how to do this in the articles section that's well written.

Open the box up and find the loose solder joint on the PCB and hit it with a dab of solder. Takes 5 min. and saves you 50+ bucks. I did it on mine and 3 or 4 friends and it works every time.

Damn you didderson, I wrote that, hit submit and then it said I wasn't logged in. I log in and retype all that and you sneak in and steal my thunder. All those wasted keystrokes.

I took it apart and there isn't anything that looks burnt up. I plugged it up with it out of the box and when you push the buttons up and down, you can see the things move, it's just not making connection somewhere. I'll prolly just go to the junkyard unless you guys know of anything else.

Lol clawhammer I'm just reading the result of this thread now.

Maybe one of the internal relays are broken. But lol:

If it doesn't look burnt, make sure you've opened the white case the circuit board sits in and look where the pins connect to the board itself. Mine was cracked and kinda burnt looking, the solder being cracked was the main cause of failure, the burning look is just from electric arcing.

If you're sure your window amp is fine, maybe resolder those pins, then its probable your plug to the window amp may have a crusty pin on it. I mean the connector itself may be old and not very conductive anymore.

You'd know by looking at it. Try putting some dielectric grease on each female pin end of the plug.

Got it working. After closer inspection there was a loose solder joint. Couldn't see it unless you got real close to it and looked. Thanks everyone. I love NICO! The information you get off this site is ridiculous. NICO FTMFW!!

^ wow very informative!

I had a similar problem in the S13 but it wasn't the window amp. It was actually the wire harness for the window that was being pinched where the door pivots to shut and open.

But either way good luck. Nico has been very helpful, use it wisely.
