Getting ready to finish up my Holset HX35 top mount setup in the next 3-4 weeks and I thought I'd start a build thread. I will go in depth on several issues over the weekend like clocking and preping the turbo, oil feed setup, coolant line blockoff, down pipe setup, etc etc etc. Here are a couple of pics from my friends I-phone with the turbo on the cast log mani. It clears the hood and is very close to the BMC but I will make it work with a 2.5" down pipe and tial 38mm gate and 1.5" screamer pipe. I would recommend getting a proper peak boost or full race mani I just want to get it running and couldn't fit it in my budget until I retune with 96 lbs injectors and the lightening MAF. I'm hoping the log mani will max out my 450whp 72lb JWT rom tune. Only time will tell.

My turbo is the 7 balde HX35 off the 2001 dodge cummins. It was available on the 1998.5-2002 trucks. The older version(8blade compressor wheel) comes on the older trucks. It has the same CHRA and compressor housing as the H1C. The only difference in the old HX35 and the H1C is the H1C has a 16cm2 or larger exhaust housing and no map width enhancement groves. All HX35's have 12cm2 housings. You can spool them with the SR20 but you are better off with the BEP .70ar housing for about $200 extra.

1998.5-2002 HX35 (7blade) 60lb/min flowolder Hx35 and H1C (8blade) 52lb/min flow

There is a 92 honda hatch at my local track running 7.20's at 99mph in the 1/8th with a H1C with the BEP housing on a B16. He is 300lbs lighter than me but I launch much harder than the FWD. We should be very close but I think the SR will take the B16 even with the weight. The BEP housing is a must have for the H!C with it's larger stock housing.

DNA motoring out of Cali. Looks identical to treadstone but It was $199 not $299. It is the only cheap peace on my setup. I am pretty sure I can max out my 72lb injectors with the log mani. I got a tial 38mm gate with a 1 bar spring, Mr Gasket copper mani gasket, and I'm fabbing up my down pipe as we speak. If I don't get the results I want, then I will go peak boost tubular mani and a bulls eye power .70 ar 3" v-band turbine housing. I know it will make north of 500whp with that setup around 25-28psi and my injectors hit 100% duty cycle around 475whp according to JWT.. My only bottle neck is my mani. I will get some pictures up this weekend.

I was making about 370+ with cams and stock intake with my GT2871R. It flowed about 44lb/min and the HX35 flows about 60 lb/min and has put down 132mph traps in a 3100lb DSM with a proper tubular mani. If this thing doesn't make 450whp at <25psi the only reason will be because of the mani. Here was my situation. I blew my 2871R and a new CHRA is $950 or I could go the route I did. I have ....

$250 shipped in the turbo$200 in the mani$220 in the 1bar tial wastgate>$200 in suction kit, silicone hoses,2.5" hotpipe, DEI exhaust ceramic coating and wrap, and oil feed and drain

That totals $870 and all I need is to fab my downpipe. I will also be buying a turbo heat blanket and ISIS intake mani from enjuku and wraping my master cylinder and lines in alum high heat tape.

I could have got a 2871 CHRA and gone right back to where I was at, a reliable 350-400whp street car, but that wouldn't have been any fun would it!!!LOL

im about to have my hx35 startedin a couple of weeks. i dont know why more people dont do it, these turbos are cheap, are built for boost and spool decently too. are you going to be running a blow through MAF? could you give a full mod list of everything so far? Pics of the down pipe and hot side IC piping too pleaseee. What spark plugs to you plan on running and what gap?

do you happen to know how to make a hx35/40 hybrid? im wondering if it is sold as a hybrid like the one from http://www.htturbo.com/hh.htm , or can one be made from a hx35 core with hx40 compressor housing and wheel, or hx40 core with hx35 turbine housing and wheel. what would it take to push 600whp from a sr20det? just curious

I will be welding up my down pipe and street tuning by Thursday. I promise I will get on here and do a detailed discription of my setup. I've been taking pictures as i go but I haven't had time to update my thread. My Isis intake mani, turbo blanket, and CS catch can will be here Thursday and I will be installing the intake Friday. They sent me a .9bar tial wastegate so I will be at 13psi on the gate not 14.5!! I am scheduled for the dyno March the 6th. I will update this thread sometime before then. I promiss. Here is a pic to get you by.....

My current JWT tune is good for 450whp with the 72lbers and the cobra MAF. If I can get close to that at around 25-28psi with the log mani and the stock 12cm2 housing on my HX35 on 110 race gas I will be thrilled "for now"!! I have considered the power FC d-jetro but I have had great luck with my JWT rom tune for the past 2 years and I have decided to stick with their product. I will be going with the lightning MAF and 96lb injectors and data logging in the future. I wil go peak boost mani and BEP .70ar exhaust housing with the new tune, and possible change compressor covers and wheel to the HX40 pro(6 blade) and have the HX35/40 hybrid. capable of around 70 lb/min. I just want to get my car running and practice launching at the track with my new setup. I've got some friends talking $hit about the holset(they think I'm crazy for leaving Garret) and I want to show them whats up. I've got a couple of Evo's and a badass DSM with FP3052's that I have a date with as soon as I get back from the dyno. I just can't wait.

Im building an HX35 powered B16 as we speak, I think Holsets are proven turbos with the durability that one would expect from Garret or any other turbo manfacturer, Ill be keeping an eye on your thread, nice thing youve got going here.

Got my car running today and it is going to be a beast. I have only 1 prpblem. I must have my WG vacuum run wrong because it is over boosting and the gate isn't opening up at all. This is my first external gate so I will figure it out. I did a 3rd gear pull and it hit well over 20psi and scared the crap out of me. It spools just as fast if not faster than my GT2871R(i know that sounds impossible but it does). I have to figure out my WG problem and install my ISIS intake from enjuku and I will be ready for the dyno Friday if everything goes well. Here are some pics of my custom downpipe and turbo blanket and DEI header wrap on my DP. I angle cut the 2.5" and tigged it to the OEM flange after marking it with a sharpie for the proper angle. Then I had my buddy at the exhaust shop slip fit the bend over the angle cut and cut the flange and o2 bung offmy old megan turbo outlet and we welded it back on in the same location as it was before. It came out perfect and the exhaust actually sets higher under the car then it did before. I will get some pics from a rack this weekend to show the fit and finish of the DP. Here are some pics of the setup. I will try and make a video and video the dyno as soon as I get the WG vacuum figured out.....Here is my intake that is going on tomorrow and the casting looked great. It is much better than any ebay manifold I've seen and just as good as the greddy IMO!

thats a nice shinny intake manifold.

as far as it spooling so fast is because of the vacuum hose going to your waste gate. the line should be connected some where between the turbo and throttle body closer to the turbo the better.

when the motor is under vacuum the vacuum actually keeps the wastegate open. once the engine rpms are flowing enough air for the turbo to over come the vacuum and enter boost the boost then closes the wastegate.

now there isa spring inside that is a set value like a 10 psi spring. and when the turbo hits 10 psi the waste gate opens back up again allowing air to go by until it drops below 10psi then it closes again
