My recently purchased 92 Q45 has me stymied with several problems: Steering is OK for a minute after starting then becomes heavy (hard to turn), trip odometers stay on 0.0, and cruise control light (at the main switch) comes on but will not engage. I was getting a "Transmission malfunction" message on start up (the check gave me a code "2") but this is no longer occuring. I don't have any test equipment but after perusing the mx manual I think the transmission speed sensor is a common denominator. Do you agree and if so, where is it?

Rex, I'm not sure I see the relevance. Are you suggesting the problem may be the TPS?

The speed sensor send the signal to an IC on the back of speedometer where it is translated to multiple isolated 0-5 voy signals to the various systems: to the tcu, PS, cruise, ecu etc.

You monitor the variable frequency output of the speed sensor to check it...........spin the unit and watch an oscilloscope. If ok and not a bad wire betwen speedometer then the IC board on rear of speedometer.

You were not clear if speedometer works?

The speedometer works just fine. Does that mean the problem is somewhere other than speed sensor (he says hopefully). Given that I have to take the transmission down to get to the speed sensor, I think I want to explore all other possibilities first! Pulling the trans definitely exceeds my capabilities.

I have had speed sensor problem for a couple of years. Last year I got the check engine light off long enough to get it inspected. This year I was not so lucky. I bought a instrument cluster off of ebay but was for a TCS model so I could not use. I went to the dealer with trying to get a new speed assembly but started to talking with a Infinti mechanic about the problem. I told him the speedo works sometimes. He seemed to remember a problem report that required the four philip head screws to be tightened. I took out the cluster this evening and tightened every philips head screw on the back of the cluster. So far on two trips the speedo hasn't failed. I will keep you posted if this fixes the problem. Now I just got to get to the inspection station.
