I need a lil advice as to what i should do about my beloved 350. im from the so cal area and my car just started having a sound when you turn on the car something like cans being thrown around i took it to my regular mechanic and he said i should take it to the dealership. there they told me that i needs a new engine, that when they checked the oil it had metal flakes in it i needs to replace the block. I want to take the car for a second opinion i just ran out of my extended warranty and they want to charge me 14k for a new motor and transmission but the car still runs fairly well despite the noise i'm still the fastest thing on the block but i was wondering if anyone can reccomend a good mechanic who works on z's in my area cause i had a buddy look at it he goes to uti and he didn't think it was the motor itself but maybe something else.i need help

The only way to really know what is going on with it is going to be tearing it apart. And once you get that far you might as well have it rebuilt. I wouldn't think that a good rebuild would be over $5k. Leave it to the stealership to want $14k lol.

u can get motor on ebay for like 4 grand and have a shop put it in for like 1-2 grand why would u pay 14 when the car is only worth like 14 ur better off just getting a used one at that price.

As stated above, you have spun a rod bearing. Probably #1 based on what I have seen.

We just did one for a customer and it ran about $3750 for rods, pistons, bearings and ARP studs.

Machine shop is about $800 to do the block .20 over, polish the crank and mill the heads.

Figure $6k or so to be running again.

a rod bearing doesn't stop making noise....until it pokes a hole int he side of the engine, it also feels like a rev limiter, I'd suspect the issue has somehting to do with your timing chain, but bottom line the engine needs to come out and be torn down and fiigured otu for sure, and why would they quote you a trans replacement for an engine noise?

Excellently said! Rods and the bearings, will never ever stop making noise. In fact, they will deteriorate much faster with much more noise until they poke through or destroy the whole block by itself. That you are still driving the car at all suggests that a part connected to the timing chain is the problem. I suspect a small component that holds the timing chain may have failed and thus, the timing chain itself. For under 1K, your timing chain and the failed part, can be replaced. The earlier you get this replaced, the netter off you will be. But i wouldn't advice driving the car around as is or else something worse will break. Just my 2 cents. I could be wrong.
